HANNAHVILLE — The Hannahville Soaring Eagles soccer team was in complete control in the first half of Monday’s game against Munising Baptist, but there were two halves in the game and the Bobcats erased the 3-0 deficit to tie the game and force a shootout where they claimed a 6-3 victory.
Hannahville got on the board first with 31:00 to go in the first half as junior Miles Halfaday scored to put the Soaring Eagles up 1-0.
Junior MJ Smith scored a pair of goals in two minutes as he scored the first one with 16:27 to go in the first half and the second one with 14:28 to go in the first half to extend the lead to 3-0.
“The ball went between the defenders and bounced off somebody and I was able to kick it in,” Smith said. “The team has been coming along well since the game against Bayside and we just need to keep doing what we are doing and continue to improve.”
The Bobcats finally got on the board with 34:06 to go in the game when sophomore Trek found the back of the net on a nice move to the goal. Trek got his second goal of the game with 5:02 remaining in the game to cut the deficit to two.
“I could tell we had our heads hung low in the first half,” Trek said. “In the second half we knew if we fought hard we could get back in the game and we did that in the second half.
Bobcats senior Dylan Swift scored a goal with 2:15 to go to tie the game at three.
“We started getting some big shots on goal late in the game,” Swift said. “And that really helped us going into the shootout.”
The Bobcats improved to 7-0 with the win and seem to be in control as tournament time comes next month.
“This game today proves that these kids care and that they want to win,” Bobcats coach Hunter MacArthur said. “The only message we sent at halftime was to go out and get one to get things started and get some momentum and they came out and executed well.
In the shootout Swift scored the first goal and Gabe Heyrman and Will Norton each scored a goal as the Bobcats took the contest.
“We knew we had to play a full game against them,” Soaring Eagles coach Dan Kleikamp said. “We did a good job for about 60 minutes but couldn’t close it out. We have some young kids that we are still looking at where they would be best after losing some big seniors last year so we will have to make some small adjustments and move on from there.”
