Sports Flashback Aug. 24-30
Aug. 24, 1970 — Bob Iverson of Hyde picked up his 15th victory this season, taking the modified main event in stock car races at the Escanaba Speedway. He was followed by Hubert Brazeau of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. and Bob Hengesh of Esky.
Jerry Richer of Schaffer took the checkered flag in the modified feature, followed by Herb Iverson of Hyde and Ed Powley. Ray Gardner of Escanaba became a double-winner, taking the modified first heat and semi-feature. Herb Iverson captured the second heat with Gary Randall of Esky runner-up.
Aug. 28, 1970 — Ron Smith scattered five hits as the Escanaba Papermakers opened with a 5-2 softball victory over Marquette Northwoods Supper Club in the Upper Peninsula Class B tournament. The Papermakers collected 11 hits, including home runs by John Martinac and Mike Skorupski.
Aug. 28, 1975 — Flat Rock captured the Country Girls League softball title in a 7-5 triumph over Perronville. Debbie Soper led the winners with four hits and Bonnie Jacques ripped a triple, helping Sharon Benoit gain the mound victory. Judy Petrick collected four hits for Perronville. Pat Scheuren absorbed the loss.
Aug. 30, 1975 — The Kingsford Flivvers spoiled Fred Boddy’s coaching debut as they handed the Gladstone Braves a 14-6 football loss. Gladstone took a 6-0 lead on a Tim Peterson’s five-yard pass to Dave Wescott late in the second quarter and John Petr led the Braves in rushing with 70 yards on 22 carries.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos and Ishpeming Westwood Patriots played to a 6-6 in their season-opener. Richard Gauthier scored BR-H’s first touchdown in nearly two years on a nine-yard pass from Doug Good.
Aug. 26, 1985 — Nancy Mantel, Karen Wiles and Cheri Severinsen combined forces to take top honors in the Delta County women’s scramble golf tournament with 68 strokes at the Gladstone Golf Club. Marie and Becky Iverson and Betty Papaik also shot 68, but were runners-up on a tie-breaker. Rita Sturdy, Marie Harris and Sherry Dunathan placed third at 73.
Aug. 27, 1985 — Modified fastpitch softball made its debut in Escanaba and the Upper Peninsula as the Norsemen posted a 7-1 victory over the Hyde Merchants. Floyd Kallio tossed a three-hitter through six innings before giving up his only run in the seventh. Jim Lawson and Darryl Starnes led the winners with two hits apiece.
