Sports Flashback Aug. 17-23
Aug. 18, 1960 — Elaine Nelson earned the Highland Golf Club women’s championship, defeating her mother Vicki Beck 3 and 2 in title match. The former Elaine Beck parred holes No. 1, 3 and 5 and finished the front nine with 45 strokes. Lorraine Johnson took the first flight with one-up victory over Blanche LaCrosse.
Aug. 19, 1960 — Gloria Hansley was crowned Escanaba Country Club champion following a 4-up victory over Rosemary LeMire. Hansley shot 47 on the front nine, holding a two-stroke lead over LeMire. Doris Kelsey defeated Sally Fontaine one-up for top honors in the first flight.
Bev Farrell captured her first Gladstone Golf Club title, edging Kate VanDonsel on the 19th hole. Marilyn Buckman topped Doris Becvar for first flight honors.
Aug. 22, 1960 — Don Smith scattered five hits and struck out 11 at Flat Rock posted an 8-3 American Legion baseball triumph over Rapid River in a make-up game. Smith collected four hits and Jim Plouff and Leroy Rapette added three each.
Don Whitens fired a one-hitter and fanned 11, leading the Hermansville Little Leaguers past Bark River 8-1. Doug Lacoursie rapped a grand slam home run and Ron Povolo added a solo shot.
Aug. 18, 1965 — Sally Fontaine earned the Escanaba Country Club women’s title, edging Mary Sue Boyce one-up in 21 holes. Ruth Needham topped Millie Boyce one-up for the first flight championship.
Aug. 17, 1970 — The tournament trail ended for the Manistique All-Stars in a 5-3 loss to Fort Des Moines, Ia., a game shy of the Central Regional tourney. Jay Ketcik and Jeff Miller led Manistique with two hits apiece.
Mary Clark recorded a hole-in-one at the Highland Golf Club, using a 4-wood on the 152-yard No. 13 hole.
Aug. 19, 1970 — Don Miller recorded an ace three days later in the Escanaba Country Club Men’s Twilight League with an 8-iron on the 120-yard No. 7 hole.
Aug. 20, 1970 — Dorothy Loodeen shot one-over-par in the final nine holes, good enough to capture the Highland Golf Club Women’s champion 2 and 1 over Elaine Nelson. Carole Daniels finished on top in the first flight, defeating Bunny Moersch.
Aug. 21, 1970 — Bill Smith fired a no-hitter and finished just one out away from a perfect game as Flat Rock blanked Negaunee Blue Lakes 8-0 in the Upper Peninsula Class C men’s softball tournament at Stambaugh. Sonny Pasanen led the winners with three hits. Jim Pinar and Bill Plouff added two apiece.
Aug. 22, 1970 — Bill McGovern tossed a three-hitter as the Escanaba Merchants opened with a 5-3 triumph over Houghton Bosch Brewery in the U.P. Class A tourney at Ishpeming. Cliff O’Donnell and Don Martineau led the Merchants with two hits each.
