Sports Flashback Aug.10-16

Aug. 11, 1975 — Ken Smith of Escanaba set the pace throughout the day, topping a field of 53 horseshoe pitchers for the Class A championship in the Upper Peninsula Invitational tournament at the Wells Township courts. Smith finished 6-1 with a 52-percent ringer showing. He topped Dennis Carlson of Ishpeming in the title match and Jim Aird of Esky placed third. Harvey Beem of Esky claimed top honors in Class B and Don Smith copped Class C.

Manistique Jax Bar captured the Class A regional slowpitch softball tournament, sweeping a pair of games from Iron Mountain Mayme’s Bar at Republic. Jax scored seven times in the fifth inning of the opener in a 9-3 victory, then won the final 12-10. Neil Hartman rapped seven home runs in the tourney, including a pair of solo shots in the finale. Doug Demers was the winning pitcher in both games.

Gladstone Idle Time Bar copped the Class B district title in a 5-2 triumph over Rapid River Swallow Inn. Steve Tufnell, Steve Delvaux and Ray Hughes led Idle Time with two hits apiece and winning pitcher Charlie Creten allowed seven hits. Doug Moss and Laverne Buzzo had two hits apiece for Swallow Inn.

Aug. 13, 1975 — Joe Harvey of Escanaba, a 13th-round draft pick of the New England Patriots, survived the cut to 60 players in the National Football League. Harvey, a defensive end candidate from Northern Michigan University, played briefly in the Patriots’ 28-14 loss to the New York Giants in their pre-season opener.

Harvey was then released by the Patriots three days later, becoming a free agent after clearing waivers.

Aug. 12, 1985 — Scott Erickson of Marquette captured medalist honors in the 71st Annual Upper Peninsula Men’s Golf Association tournament, shooting 285 through the four-day event at the Gladstone Golf Club. Mike Thomsen of Menominee took the runner-up spot with 287 strokes. He was followed by Jay Synkelma of Ironwood at 289, Si Clements of Ishpeming 293 and Pat Manning of Escanaba 296.

Norm LaPalm sank a hole-in-one at the Highland Golf Club, using a 7-wood on the 140-yard, No. 16 hole.

Aug. 13, 1985 — Brian Robinette led the way in the final junior golf tournament this season, shooting a 38 at the Highland. Robinette, who won the age 12-13 division, finished six strokes better than runner-up Mark Butryn.

Aug. 14, 1985 — Marie Green recorded a hole-in-one at Indian Lake Golf & Country Club near Manistique, using a 9-iron on the 100-yard No. 4 hole during league play. She became the first woman in two years to achieve that when Beth Cayia aced the same hole.

Aug. 15, 1985 — Becky Iverson overcame a three-stroke deficit in the final six holes to earn the Bluff Country Club women’s championship. Iverson sank a six-foot putt for par on the No. 18 hole, edging Karen Wiles for the title. Iverson became the third member of her family to won a club championship. Her parents Ken and Marie are reigning men’s and women’s champions at Gladstone Golf Club. Iverson, who will attend Michigan State University this fall, shot a 6-over-par 78 and Wiles finished with 79.
