ESCANABA — It was a beautiful day for tennis as the Escanaba girls faced off against Menominee here Thursday with Escanaba taking the match 7-1.

Escanaba junior Anna Martin had a tough match at No. 1 singles over Menominee’s Elana Murphy but came away with the win in two sets 6-4, 6-3.

“Elana was at No. 1 singles last season so she is a very experienced singles player,” Escanaba coach Chris Ogren said. “She likes to take the ball early and really dictate the the point, but Anna did a good job of staying patient and not forcing anything. Anna didn’t look like a player that has only been at No. 1 singles for two matches today and, I was very impressed with her level of play.”

In No. 1 doubles action, Escanaba seniors Brooklyn Hackleman and Aubrey Elliott picked up the three-set win over Menominee’s Ella Barker and Bianca Kurtz 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.

“Aubrey and Brooklyn really found their stride in the third set,” Ogren said. “They started playing the net more aggressively and picking good spots to place the ball with their groundstrokes.”

Escanaba’s Claire Jacobsen and Hailee Cloutier also picked up a win at No. 3 doubles over Menominee’s Ella Chouinard Asya Myhand in a pair of sets 6-1, 6-2.

“It was a lot warmer and less windy today,” Jacobsen said. “We did a good job of communicating well with each other and moving across the court not letting many balls get past us.”
