ESCANABA — Escanaba tennis continued on the hot start as they took down Kingsford 6-2 in a Great Northern Conference tennis match here Friday.
The Escanaba doubles teams picked up right where they left off as Aubrey Elliott and Brooklyn Hackelman picked up the win at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-0. Elliott made a nice play as she returned a ball just inside the line to take the fifth game of the second set.
“I was just looking for openings,” Elliott said. “Trying to take advantage of everything that I can.”
Escanaba’s Sophie Hill and Isabella Noblet picked up the win over Kingsford’s Alaysa Bacon and Mira Johnson in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
“Sophie and Bella played a back and forth match,” Eskymos coach Chris Ogren said. “Both girls were playing the net well today and were showing some of their best footwork of the season so far.”
In singles action, Escanaba’s Lily Benetti earned the win over Kingsford’s Chloe Lanning. Lily was able to earn the win while showing improved groundstrokes.
“Lily was doing a great job hitting the ball deep in the court,” Ogren said. “If she can continue to do that consistently, she will keep winning.”
The match that drew the most attention was at No. 1 singles as Kingsford’s Aubrie Moore defeated Escanaba junior Anna Martin 6-2, 4-0. The match ended early when Martin sustained an injury during the second set.
