ESCANABA — The feel of a fall day was in full display here Monday as Escanaba girls tennis defeated Gladstone 7-1 at Abrahamson Courts.

Escanaba junior Anna Martin faced off against Gladstone’s Carly Maki at No.1 singles picking up the win in two sets 6-1, 6-1.

“It felt good to get back on the court,” Martin said. “The wind was quite a big challenge especially on the serving side you have to hit softer on a day like today.”

Olivia Vogel also earned a win at No. 2  for the Eskymos as she defeated Alexis Burch 6-0, 6-1.

“It was our first game of the season,” Escanaba coach Chris Ogren said. “We have eight new faces in the lineup this year and they all played good tennis today.”

Escanaba junior Varrah Veeser held on for a win over Gladstone’s Tati Martinez at No. 3 singles in a pair of 6-4 sets.

“That was the match of the day,” Chris Ogren said. “She got some huge points and played very well in a long first set.”

Escanaba was very strong in doubles action winning all four matches. The closest match was at No. 3 doubles as Hailee Cloutier and Claire Jacobsen picked up the win for the Eskymos as they defeated Gladstone’s Elle Mathias and Miranda Drielick 6-2, 6-2.

Madison Sundquist picked up the only win for Gladstone as she defeated Escanaba sophomore Lily Benetti 6-2, 6-4.

“Madison was a bright spot for us today,” Gladstone coach Ryan Barron said. “She hustles and is very coachable and she’s always looking to improve her game.”
