Broncos outlast Maroons in volleyball thriller

HARRIS — Bark River-Harris and Menominee went the distance in a non-conference volleyball match with the Broncos picking up the win over Menominee in five sets, (25-14, 20-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-12) here Tuesday.
The Broncos got off to a fast start, as sophomore Alana Nault started the game with a 13-point scoring run including a pair of aces.
“I was really trying to keep the energy up,” Nault said. “I just wanted to encourage my teammates and get us going right from the start.”
Broncos senior Dakota Bridges also came up big during the run as she tallied four kills during the scoring run.
Menominee finally got on the board as senior Jazmine Jasenovsky delivered a serve just inside the line for an ace, one of two on the night.
The two teams exchanged small runs back and forth for the rest of the first set which the Broncos ultimately won 25-14.
In the second set the Broncos again came out with a hot start as they took a quick 5-1 lead. Menominee answered with a three-point run to cut the deficit to one at 5-4.
The Broncos extended the lead to three as Bridges delivered a serve just inside the line for an ace to put the Broncos up 7-4.
The Maroons answered by scoring six of the next seven points to take a 10-8 lead. Menominee extended their lead to 15-10 as the Broncos’ return hit the net. Both teams exchanged points here and there as the Maroons took the second set 25-20.
The third set started close with the scoring going back and forth with four ties early the last one tied it at eight.
The Broncos scored five of the next six points to take a 13-9 lead on a kill by Kaet Erickson.
Menominee answered right back, scoring seven of the next eight points to regain the lead at 17-16.
The Broncos scored six of the next seven points including a three-point scoring run by junior Mira Johnson to put the Broncos back in front 22-18 and they didn’t look back taking the set 25-19.
“We did a good job of starting fast in sets tonight,” Broncos coach Brooke Bartley said. “We need to work on our serve and receive and keep our energy high for the whole set because that really got us in the second and fourth sets.”
The Broncos jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the fourth set and quickly extended the lead to 11-4 on an ace by junior Stella Rebitzke. Later in the set Emma Zawada made a nice serve that the Maroons were unable to make a play on, resulting in an ace and giving the Broncos a 19-14 lead.
The Maroons answered back with a six-point scoring run to take a 20-19 lead. The Broncos were able to tie it up on three separate occasions late but the Maroons prevailed in the set 26-24.
The Broncos jumped out to an early 7-2 lead including a pair of kills by Bridges who had 11 on the night.
“I had a really good mind set coming into this game,” Bridges said. “I was looking for the opportunities to get kills and work on things we have been working on in practice.”
The Broncos went on to take the fifth set 15-12.
