Sports flashback July 6-12
July 6, 1960 — Frank Trotter scattered four hits, helping Insurance Association hand the Escanaba Bankers their first loss this season 6-1 in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League. Trotter and Paul Kangas had two hits each. Jim Berish and Dick Craig had two apiece for Insurance.
July 7, 1960 — In another Babe Ruth contest, Bob Hengesh collected three hits as Paper Company took a 12-11 decision from Harni Local 632. Jon Lee, Dave Hunter and Kenton Anderson added two hits apiece. Dick Sivertsen had a pair for Harni.
July 12, 1960 — L&R Sport took over first place in the National Softball League with a 4-0 triumph over Blatz Beer. Jim Way tossed a three-hitter for L&R, which scored twice in the third inning and added a pair of runs on Don Provo’s single in the seventh.
July 7, 1965 — Carl Eastman fired a two-hitter as the Teamsters blanked Michigan Hotel 13-0 in the Escanaba Softball League. Eastman, Boots Boucher, Fran Derouin and Bob Bessette had two hits each.
Elmer Swanson shot a one-under-par 35 in the Escanaba Country Club Men’s Twilight League. Fran Boyce hit 36 and Bill Eis, Jr., Dave Andrews and Don Scott carded 39.
July 8, 1965 — Betty Thorsen and Marlene McGovern combined on a one-hitter as State Bank whipped Tim & Sally’s Restaurant 14-1 in the Escanaba Girls’ Softball League. Jennie Aho ripped a home run and triple. Gaye Corriveau collected three hits and Parma Smith had two.
July 12, 1965 — Jim Boyle threw a three-hitter, leading the Escanaba Cubs to a 7-1 American Legion baseball victory over Manistique, which committed 10 errors in the Waubung League contest. Pete Benson and Jim Fitzharris led the Cubs with two hits each.
Jim Mastie scattered five hits as Powers-Hermansville defeated Gladstone 4-2. Denny McClure had two hits for the winners.
Jim Sundalius of Gladstone fired a 73, earning medalist honors in the Nahma Open Golf tournament. Jack Smith was runner-up at 74 and Connie Nelson of Manistique and Jerry Martin of Highland shared third pace with 75.
Jerry Richer of Escanaba averaged 58 miles per hour while winning the modified feature on the newly resurfaced Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds track. Richer also won the second heat and Art Richer of Esky took the checkered flag in the first heat.
John Nelson of Escanaba copped the feature in the stock car division and Duke Gardiner of Esky turned in the season’s best time in the time trials at 23.4 seconds.
