Sports Flashback June 8-14

  June 8, 1970 — Herb Iverson won the modified feature race by several car lengths at the Escanaba Speedway. Ed Prowley of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. nipped Ken Iverson of Hyde for the runner-up spot.

  Joe Haferkorn of Norway took the checkered flag in the sportsman feature, followed by John O’Palka of Hermansville and Ken Viau of Escanaba.

  Don Benoit of Escanaba was the lone double-winner, taking the modified semi-feature and first heat.

  Harold VanEffen and Bill Eis, Jr. of the Escanaba Country Club captured medalist honors in the Gladstone Golf Club Best-Ball tournament, shooting 133 through the two-day event. Jack Smith and Jerry  Martin of Highland gained runner-up honors at 135, followed by defending champs Ken Hruska and Paul Specker of Marquette with 138.

  June 9, 1970 — Kiwanis scored a run in the eighth inning, squeezing past the Bankers 4-3 in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League. Winning pitcher Jim Nevala tossed a two-hitter. Mike Daily ripped two doubles and Jim Joran added a pair of singles. Richard Miketinac took the loss despite 13 strikeouts. He allowed six hits.

  June 10, 1970 — Tim McClure fired a no-hitter, leading Powers to an 3-1 American Legion baseball victory over Manistique in the Waubung League. McClure recorded 18 strikeouts and Manistique’s Russ King whiffed 17 batters and allowed seven hits. Tim Moran finished with three.

  June 12, 1970 — The Escanaba Merchants moved into a first-place tie with Flat Rock in the Esky Senior Softball League, defeating Goebels 10-4. Wally Flath, Don Martineau, Bob Corriveau and Al Erickson, who ripped a solo home run, led the Merchants with two hits each. John Way, who also homered, and Bob Irish paced Goebels with two hits apiece.

  June 9, 1975 — Nancy Gage scattered three hits and clubbed two home runs as the Esky Merchants slipped past Idle Hour Bar 11-10 in the Escanaba Women’s Softball League. Losing pitcher Candy Swetkis allowed just four hits. Idle Hour, however, committed eight errors.

  June 11, 1975 — Spike Hirn tossed a one-hitter as Mead Paper Company took over first place in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League in a 12-1 rout of the Bankers. Hirn also slammed a three-run homer and a two-run double. Chip Olsen went 4-for-4 and Doug Coyne finished 3-for-3, leading a 10-hit attack off Mike Mattson. Keenan Failing had the lone hit for the Bankers.
