Sports flashback June 22-28

June 22, 1990 — Nathan DeLany fired his second no-hitter this season as the Bankers earned a 1-0 baseball victory over Anderson Tire in the Escanaba Major Little League. DeLany struck out 10 and walked one, spoiling his bid for a perfect game. Eric Gafner took the loss despite throwing a three-hitter. Ryan Smith had two hits and scored on a ground out by Dennis Cummings in the fourth inning.

  The Rapid River Lions scored six times in the sixth, rallying past Hilltop RV & Sport 10-9 in the Gladstone Major League. Brock Larrabee rapped a three-run single in the sixth for the winners who also capitalized on an error. Steve Hurkmans had two hits for Hilltop.

  June 23, 1990 — Kevin Tapani outdueled Bret Saberhagen for the second time in six days, helping the Minnesota Twins post a 3-2 triumph over the Kansas City Royals. Tapani retired 16 batters in a row while helping the Twin snap a four-game losing streak. He fanned six and walked one through eight innings.

  June 25, 1990 — Jerry Wiles, Tom Gregoire and Paul Schrader combined to win the Cooney Hogan Memorial Scramble for the third straight year at the Escanaba Country Club. They finished with 118 strokes in the two-day, 36-hole event on their home course. Gladstone natives Greg Aartila, Steve Bratonia and Joe Moberg were runners-up at 122 and Brian Robinette, Jim Lueneburg and Don Miller of Esky were third with 126.

  June 26, 1990 — Candy Swetkis tossed a two-hitter and Kipling Bar unleashed a 21-hit attack in a 15-0 softball rout of the Bark River Merchants in the Women’s Fastpitch League. Jean Ammel ripped a three-run triple. Shannon Gaul and Judi Skradski also tripled.

  June 22, 1995 — The Escanaba Cubs hung on for a 9-6 American Legion baseball triumph over Marquette Blue. Joe Freidhoff, Jamie Mullin and Jeff Bullin led the Cubs with two hits apiece.

  U.P. Environment scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning, squeezing past Tunes Bayou 5-4 in the Women’s Fastpitch League. Winning pitcher Laura Bureau recorded 10 strikeouts and Stephanie Mattson and Misty Johnson had two hits each. Jenny Hill led Tunes Bayou with three hits and Natalie Fisher added two. Kristin Cole took the loss despite 11 strikeouts.

  June 23, 1995 — Marie Iverson of Highland Golf Club earned medalist honors in the Highland Women’s Open, shooting 161 through the two-day tournament. Nancy Mantel of Escanaba was runner-up at 165, one stroke better than Becky Papaik of Terrace Bluff.

  June 26, 1995 — Mike Gardner of Escanaba set the qualifying time track record in street stock for the third time this year, touring the oval in 16.257 seconds at Norway Speedway. Kevin Cywinski of Menominee of Menominee became the new recordholder in late model in 14.195, surpassing the former record (14.345) by Bob Iverson of Hyde in 1982. Earl Possi of Escanaba won the street stock A feature with Tim Jarvis of Esky runner-up. Dale Leisner took the B feature. Kevin Boerschinger placed second in the feature and won the first heat.

  June 28, 1995 — Lori Shea fired a 41 for medalist honors in the Gladstone Golf Club Women’s League. Sandy Butler, Rosie Spindler and Mary Bergman shot 43 and Ellen Swenson had 44.
