Gladstone baseball battles to claim district championship

MENOMINEE — Make it 11 straight district titles for Gladstone baseball.

The Braves used a seven-run fifth inning to knock off Menominee 8-5 in the title game and conquered Iron Mountain 16-3 in the semifinal round. Gladstone faces Negaunee in the regional semifinal round at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Gladstone’s Don Olsen Field.

Everything appeared to be going Menominee’s way in the district title game. The Braves were staring down the barrel of a 2-0 deficit after four innings. Then Gladstone senior Gavin Frossard safely reached first base off an error to lead off the bottom of the fifth. The next six Braves batter’s reached base. And thanks to a two-run single from senior Austin Pepin, an RBI single from Mattonen and a three-run single from Frossard in his second at-bat of the inning the Braves took a 7-2 lead into the sixth inning.

They never trailed again despite a two-run single from Menominee’s Garrett Carlson in the seventh.

Mattonen earned the win on the mound, allowing one earned run off one hit with three walks and a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Junior Trevor Thorbahn started for Gladstone, allowing one earned run off three hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in four innings.

Carlson finished 3-for-4 for Menominee.

The Braves knocked off Iron Mountain 16-3 in the semifinal round. Gladstone mustered a whopping 16 hits and recorded zero errors in the five-inning victory.

Mattonen went 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs. Senior Bret Seger was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Vinny Rebholz finished 2-for-3 and drove in three. Aiden Burie added three RBIs and a double. Pepin, Frossard and Landon VanTassell each had two hits.

Thorbahn walked away with the win, allowing two hits, two walks and struck out two in two innings of relief. Nate Beauchamps got the start, allowing three runs off one hit with three walks and four strikeouts across two innings of work. Mattonen struck out one in a perfect inning of relief.

Menominee defeated Superior Central 2-0 in its district semifinal game.
