ESCANABA — There’s a new team atop the Michigan High School Softball Association’s polls for Division 2, and it happens to be Escanaba.
The Eskymos not only finished their season with a 34-4 record which tied the program’s regular season win total, but they earned two wins over Kingsford on Thursday.
Here’s what went down.
Game one
No. 1 Escanaba 19, Kingsford 0
Esky’s six seniors were set to play their final set of regular season games at Abrahamson Field. Yet, game one saw junior Harlee Coolman have the big game.
The Eskymos’ second baseman finished a single away from the cycle and drove in seven runs. Coolman belted a three-run home run in the first for a 5-0 lead to highlight a seven-run frame. She added a three-run triple in the second which ultimately saw her touch home plate. She added an RBI double which smacked the top of the fence in left field and land back in play as part of a 12-run second inning.
It was a game where all nine Esky batters recorded at least one hit on a day where a strong wind was blowing everything from home plate to the outfield.
Senior Grayson LaMarche was 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Senior McKenzie Engebretson went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs. Senior maddy Mott was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Landry Brau was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs while allowing one hit and striking out seven in three innings of work in the circle.
“I gave the girls a day off (on Wednesday) and man, they came out and put on a hitting display that I don’t think I’ve seen all year,” Esky coach Andy Fields said. “That was quite impressive. I’m excited to see what happens here moving forward.”
Game two
No. 1 Escanaba 11, Kingsford 1
Thursday’s finale was wash, rinse repeat for the orange and black. Mott finished 2-for-2 with two doubles. Senior Clara Braun belted a home run. Junior Breleigh Reinhart and Chloe Dubord each ripped doubles.
And outside of one home run by Kingsford’s Karly Trevillian in the fourth, LaMarche was her typical self in the circle. She fanned 15 Flivvers and allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings of work while finishing 1-for-1 with three walks from the plate.
But as the game entered the sixth frame all six seniors had their moment of acknowledgement. One by one the seniors were pulled for substitutes, giving each senior a moment to be recognized for their accomplishments thus far.
“It’s hard,” Field admitted. “It’s always hard because these seniors have meant a lot to this program. They’ve been everything to this team this year.”
What’s next
The No. 1 Eskymos and Flivvers go at it one last time at 4 p.m. Tuesday in district quarterfinal action.
