Sports flashback April 27-May 3

April 29, 1960 — The Gladstone Braves won their track and field opener, squeezing past the Rapid River Rockets 55-54. The outcome was decided in the last event (pole vault) in which Gladstone’s Gary Sodergard and Rapid River’s Jim Carlson shared first place at 10 feet.

Ted Goetz provided the Braves with victories in the 100-yard dash (10.85) and 220 (25.4) and Carlson took the 440 (56.9).

Grant (Bud) Hess set a single-game record at Midway Lanes in Gladstone, rolling a 290 in the City Association bowling tournament. He knocked over eight pins with his first ball before hitting 11 consecutive strikes. His score was one pin better than the previous-best 289 by Dick Nelson of Escanaba in 1958.

The Hermansville Redskins dropped a 9-0 decision to the Felch Forresters in the baseball opener. Don Wickman led Felch with four hits. Gary McClure had a pair for Hermansville, which committed seven errors in the contest.

May 3, 1960 — Hermansville struggled again in a 5-3 loss to the Norway Knights. Irwin Scholtz took the loss, allowing just four hits and striking out six, but walking six. The Redskins finished with three errors this time.

April 28, 1965 — The Escanaba Eskymos opened their track and field season with a 67-42 triumph over Marquette. Esky’s Bill Sarnowski won shot put with a school-record toss of 51-¾ and teammate Jim Hansen was runner-up at 49-6. Gary Vandeville added firsts in the 100 (11.1) and 220 (25.3). Ray Anderson was also a double-winner, taking high jump (5-6) and 800 (2:11.1) and Jim Boyle took the 180 low hurdles at 23.4.

April 29, 1965 — The Holy Name Crusaders weren’t as fortunate, dropping a 78-31 decision to the Kingsford Flivvers. Kingsford’s Dick Berlinski won high jump (5-7), long jump (21-6), 100 (10.5) and 200 (23.0). Holy Name’s Mike Kidd took the 120 high hurdles (16.9). Jim Groos captured the 880 (2:13.6). John Burroughs copped the mile (5:08.6) and Eugene Fregetto added a first in shot (46-6¾).

April 30, 1965 — Russ Carlson and Dave Smith collected two hits apiece as the Powers-Spalding Tigers earned an 11-10 baseball victory over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves. Smith took the win in relief of Jim Kleikamp.

May 3, 1965 — Escanaba captured the Great Northern Conference track title with 70 points. Kingsford edged Menominee 47-40 and runner-up honors. Sarnowski again set the school shot put record with a winning heave of 52-½ and Ray Anderson took high jump with a school-record leap of 5-10¾. Vandeville captured the 100 (10.85) and 220 (24.2). Ray Anderson took. Gary LeClaire copped the first second of the 880 (2:08.65) and Anderson took the second section (2:09.3). Tom Duchaine added a first in the mile (4:48.3) and Boyle took first in the low hurdles. Holy Name’s Manuel Romillo captured the high hurdles (16.85) and Kidd won the high hurdles (16.85).
