Pickford track sweeps Under the Lights meet

HARRIS — It was a close race for second place as two points separated three track and field teams in the Munising Lions ‘Under the Lights’ Invitational here Friday night.

To nobody’s surprise, the Pickford boys left with the title and 61 points. They were followed by Bark River-Harris 43, Manistique 42 and Munising 41.

Pickford’s girls also won with 45.5 points, followed by Felch North Dickinson 40, Stephenson 37 and BR-H 33.

This meet was moved from Munising due to a sinkhole caused by heavy rainfall last weekend.

BR-H sophomore Ben Knauf set the school record while placing second in the boys’ 1600-meter run in 4:43.21 and was fourth in the 800 (2:13.8).

Munising senior Trevor Nolan won the 1600 at 4:41.94 and Pickford senior Eli MacDonald took the 800 (2:08.24), edging Manistique senior Brendan Mead by .55 second.

“I was just focusing on my lap times,” Knauf said. “I wanted to be under 1:13 in each lap and paced off Trevor. That’s good competition there. I just want to keep cutting time. My goal now is to get under 4:40. I’m also happy with my time in the 800. That’s basically two sprints in a race. I give my praise to God. He gives me the strength to do this.”

Sophomore Gionni McDonough provided the Broncos with a first in the 110 hurdles (16.7) and placed third in the 300s (43.77) and senior teammate Justin Bergquist was runner-up in the 200 (24.48).

Pickford senior Tom Storey captured the 300 hurdles (41.9) with junior teammate John Anderson runner-up (43.09).

Anderson became a double-winner in the field events, taking high jump (6-2) and long jump (19-11).

Senior Ben Gilroy provided Manistique with a first in the 400 (53.4). Munising senior Dan Goss took second (53.96) and helped the Mustangs take the 3200 relay.

Rapid River senior Ed Forsund took discus (130-0). Manistique sophomore Sam Moose was second with a personal-best 121-3 with senior teammate Griffin Maline third (117-7)

Sophomore Will Spranger led Superior Central with third-place finishes in the 200 (24.57) and 400 (54.07).

Rapid River senior Emma Sundling won the girls’ 100 (13.46) and 200 (27.62) and took second in the 400 (1:03.56).

“I can’t complain about that at all, especially with all the bigger schools here,” she said. “I had hoped to be a little faster in the 400, although we had two track meets and three softball games this week. I struggled out of the blocks a little in the 100, but my other starts were good.”

BR-H sophomore Emma Zawada copped the 300 hurdles (50.23) and helped the Broncos take second in the 800 relay.

Manistique senior Leah Goudreau anchored the winning 800 relay (1:52.1) and junior Julia Nault ran the final leg of the Broncos’ 800 (1:53.31).

“Leah is great,” Nault said. “We’ve been neck and neck with Manistique all year. Our handoffs were pretty good overall. We’ve been working on those a lot. I think we all ran strong. We work together pretty well.”

Junior Talya Schreiber was a triple-winner for Pickford, which ran in three meets in four days, taking the 800 (2:30.89), 1600 (5:30.02) and 3200 (11:33.39).

“I had to prioritize rest and recovery,” she said. “I wasn’t going to give it 100 percent. My legs were a little sore, although it could have been worse. I felt pretty good, but did just enough to win the races. It was a good week. I ran the open 400 and 4×400 on Thursday (at St. Ignace). Coming off the mile, the 400 was a challenge, although it was good to get the speedwork in.”

North Dickinson won the 3200 relay (11:07.48). Junior Aubrey Applekamp took first in high jump (4-10) and third in the 300 hurdles (52.44) and freshman Aspen Anderson added a first in pole vault (7-6), edging BR-H sophomore Mira Johnson on a tie-breaker.

“I couldn’t ask for anymore from the girls,” Nordics’ coach Mike Roell said. “They did an awesome job. Everybody overachieved. I couldn’t be happier with them. Pickford has distance kids. Talya deserves all the credit. She’s quite the runner. We hung with them. I’m very happy with the way we competed.”

Norway got a first from junior Lauren Adams in the 400 (1:02.74).

Munising senior Dayne Behning captured long jump (14-7) and was runner-up in the 300 hurdles (51.94).

Manistique junior Maya Carlson took second in long jump (14-2).

Ishpeming senior Laynie Korpi was fourth in the 300s (53.55) and led off the 1600 relay (4:39.48) which came out of the first heat and placed second.

“We started this year with a new team,” she said. “Brittanie (Piotrowski) plays softball. This was her first meet and she really helped us. This was a PR by seven seconds. This is a big confidence builder going into the (Division 2) regional.”

Bark River-Harris is hosting its invitational today at 1:30 p.m.
