No. 4 Gladstone stays undefeated, sweeps Marquette

MARQUETTE — When you’re hot, you’re hot.
And when you’re 17-0 like No. 4 Gladstone softball you’re scorching hot. The Braves hit the road and earned two Great Northern Conference wins over Marquette on Wednesday.
Here’s what went down
Game 1
Gladstone 8, Marquette 0
Senior Lauren Sundquist made an impact from the plate once again. The MIT commit finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored. Sophomore Emma Trombley kept her hot streak alive with a 2-for-2 performance, drawing two walks, scoring twice and driving in a run from the No. 9 spot in the lineup/ Freshman Ava Goodman went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, sophomore Maddy Sundquist earned a double and freshman Lauren Pare and Malia Quigley each earned an RBI.
Senior Tia Schone, a shade over 24 hours removed from signing with Grand Rapid Community College, went 2-for-4 from the plate and allowed three hits with one walk and 16 strikeouts in a complete game shutout.
Marquette’s Charlye Swajanen took the loss, allowing eight earned runs off 12 hits with five walks and three strikeouts while also earning two of the Sentinels three hits.
Game 2
Gladstone 10, Marquette 2
Pare continued her growth in the circle on Wednesday. The freshman righty took the win, allowing two runs (one earned) off three hits with two walks and nine punchouts. She also earned a double and an RBI sacrifice fly to cap off a five-run first inning which saw RBI singles from Maddy Sundquist and seniors Alli Larson and Brooklyn Pendergraft. Schone ignited the scoring brigade with an RBI double.
Lauren Sundquist finished 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI. Goodman went 2-for-5 with a triple, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Schone finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Trombley, who moved to the clean up spot for Wednesday’s finale, went 1-for-4 with three stolen bases and a run scored. Maddy Sundquist finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Quigley and Molly Matthews each scored once.
Cece Fuller took the loss for Marquette, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) off 13 hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Layla Roman scored twice and earned a single. Swajanen and Lauren Johnson each earned a base hit.
