Newberry sweeps soaker of Rapid River invite

RAPID RIVER — Weather conditions may have been perfect for ducks, but less than that for track and field here Thursday.

Big Bay de Noc freshman Destiny Bleau and Rapid River senior Emma Sundling, however, didn’t let the conditions get the better of them as they shined during a steady cold rain at the Rapid River Invitational.

The Newberry girls, showing their strength in the distances, brought home the championship plaque with 82 points. They were followed by Stephenson 72 and Munising 52.

“We had a girl (senior Adanne Nwose) running the 300 hurdles for the first time and she won it (in 53.6 seconds),” Newberry coach Cori Canfield said. “The girls did a real good job. We’re happy with our overall performance.”

Newberry’s boys also won with 79 points. Rapid River edged Crystal Falls Forest Park 79-75 for runner-up honors.

“This is good for both sides of our program,” Newberry boys’ coach Drew Schultz, a Rapid River graduate, said. “This is kind of a ramp up for the (Division 3) regionals. We asked some of the guys to do things they weren’t used to and they did it very well.”

Bleau won the 100-meter dash in 13.38 seconds. 200 (27.7) and high jump at five feet.

“It was hard to stay warm, but I was able to go inside the school and get warm between events,” she said. “I feel pretty good about jumping five feet (in high jump) considering the conditions. I’d say I did pretty good for the weather.”

Sundling was runner-up in the 100 (13.52), 200 (27.8) and 400 (1:05.51) and anchored the winning 1600 relay.

The Rockets were running third in the day’s final event before the Bay College basketball recruit took the baton.

“I knew it was going to be close, but I felt pretty confident,” Sundling said. “I’m pretty consistent. It really motivates you, knowing you have to catch somebody. Destiny is a very good runner. I enjoy running against her.”

Carney-Nadeau senior Mariska Laurila won discus (102-1) and placed third in shot put (29-0)

Rock Mid Peninsula junior Hope Brunngraeber took first in shot (30-9) and third in disc (85-3).

Manistique junior Gwen Brewster placed second in shot (29-7).

Newberry junior Samantha Taylor copped the 3200 (12:12.59) and sophomore sister Abby Taylor was runner-up (12:29.35).

Sam also won the 1600 (5:28.44) and Abby took the 800 (2:26.45).

Stephenson junior Faith Cappaert captured the 400 (1:04.75) and placed second in the 800 (2:46.09) and 1600 (5:59.97).

Rapid River sophomore Jon Denkins won the boys’ 1600 (11:37.04) and placed third in the 1600 (5:19.69).

Munising senior Dan Goss captured the 1600 (4:50.83) and Stephenson junior Canon Kuntze was runner-up (5:15.55).

Rapid River junior Greg Taylor copped the 110 hurdles at 18.37, edging Crystal Falls Forest Park sophomore Dietrich Rasner by .1 second.

In the 300 hurdles, Rasner was the winner at 48.15 and Taylor was runner-up (49.25).

Manistique sophomore Sam Moose won shot (40-1) with Forest Park senior Kevin Guiliani second (39-3).

Senior Brenden Mead added a first for Manistique in the 800 (2:15.26), slightly more than a half-second ahead of Newberry junior Garrett Lewicki.

Guiliani earned top honors in disc (124-7) and Rapid River senior Ed Forslund was second (112-8).

Sophomore Vic Guiliani added a victory for the Trojans in high jump (6-0).

Newberry senior Matt Rahilly was a double-winner, taking the 100 (12.04) and long jump (19-0) and classmate Connor Carlson won the 200 (24.86) and 400 (55.97) in which Rapid River sophomore Jeb Green was runner-up (57.09).

Junior Michael Rexford provided Holy Name with a second in long jump (18-1).
