Gladstone gals finish second at regionals
ESCANABA — The Gladstone girls gave chase, but couldn’t quite catch Marquette in the Division 1 regional track and field meet here Friday.
The Sentinels regained their title with 57 points, followed by Gladstone 47½ and last year’s champion Sault Ste. Marie 30½.
“I thought our girls gave a great effort,” Braves’ coach Jim Murtha said. “I was proud of them. We got as many in (the Upper Peninsula Finals) as we could. We’re good to go.”
The Marquette boys, as expected, dominated with 102 points. They were followed by Sault 37 and Gladstone 19½.
“We’re pretty deep,” Sentinels’ coach Derek Marr said. “We have a lot of competition with each other. We’ve had 10 different school records this year. That’s pretty special. It’s cool to see the guys embrace the opportunities.”
Senior Lauren Sundquist led the Gladstone girls, taking the 100-meter dash in 13.05 seconds, anchoring the winning sprint relays and placing second in the 200 (27.39).
“I had a good mindset in the 400 relay, I guess,” Sundquist said after coming from behind in the final leg. “They’re a good team. It’s always great to win a race when you’re considered an underdog. We’re trying to work a lot on our handoffs. We’re getting close to school-record territory in the 800 relay.”
Braves’ freshman Ella Bracket won the 200 (26.89) and 400 (1:02.08), both personal-bests and helped the sprint relays.
“My start actually wasn’t that good in the 400,” she said. “I usually start with my left foot, but started with my right today and hugged the inside of my lane. I PRd in both events which is a big boost of confidence. Lauren is a big help in the relays. She’s a very important anchor.”
Esky junior Ava Stalboerger took the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 16.96, edging Gladstone senior Kristy Karl on a lean. Sault senior Annabelle Fazzari placed third at 17 seconds flat.
Karl was also part of the 400 relay and won high jump (4-10), but was unable to do pole vault which was stopped after an Esky boys’ vaulter got injured. The extent of his injuries are unknown.
Marquette showed its depth in the distances where it qualified in 10 spots.
Senior Maija Maki-Warne won the 800 (2:27.69) and 1600 (5:25.82) and placed second in the 3200 (11:59.25) and helped the winning 1600 relay.
Junior Ella Fure added a first in the 3200 (11:57.24) and placed third in the 800 (2:30.22) and 1600 (5:33.35).
“It’s good to get through all our events,” she said. “We’re friends with Alicia (Mabie). I’m so proud of her and my teammates. I didn’t really care who won. This was only my second two-mile. We trained so hard through the winter. Alisha sometimes drives to Marquette and we drive to Escanaba to train with her and travel to meets together. We averaged 40 miles a week. In the 800 my shoe came off and I ended up in third. That’s quite a track and field memory.”
Mabie was runner-up in the 800 in a personal-best 2:29.22 and 1600 (5:27.87) adn third in the 3200 (12:02.14) and anchored the third-place 3200 relay (11:04.9).
“I’m very happy with my PR (personal record) in the 800,” she said. “I have so much fun running with the Marquette girls. I’m best friends with them. This could last a lifetime. Maija and I are going to be running together at Northern. The 1600 was actually an all-out effort. I just tried to stick with them. All glory to God.”
Among the closest races was the 300 hurdles where Marquette sophomore Chloe Jackson prevailed in 49.89, followed by Fazzari in a personal-best 50.7 and Esky senior Maggie Martin (50.86) and Stalboerger (51.41), both season-bests.
Manistique junior Gwen Brewster captured discus (84-3) with Emeralds’ senior Ryleigh Rice placing (81-5½) with personal-best tosses.
Fazzari won shot (33-0) and Brewster placed second (31-1).
In the boys’ 3200, Marquette senior James Barch won at 9:33.88, followed by Sault junior Gabe Litzner (9:34.06) and Marquette junior Rorik Holmquist (9:47.21) and senior Seppi Camilli (9:53.13).
Sentinels’ sophomore Lucas Ballard copped the 800 (1:59.87) and 1600 in which runners faces a stiff breeze from the south in the backstretch (4:36.82).
Marquette senior Evan Balko was runner-up in the 800 (2:00.44), followed by junior Beepsee Teeple (2:01.28) and Sault senior Eli Hills (2:02.4).
Senior Jacob MacPhee provided the Sentinels with firsts in the 200 at a personal-best 22.53 and 400 (51.17) and helped the winning 800 and 1600 relays.
Marquette junior Jacob Norman captured the 110 hurdles in a school-record 15.82.
In the 100, Sault junior Javonte Bellamy breezed to victory in a school-best 10.94 and was third in the 200 at 22.86, also a school record.
Gladstone senior Aaron Huges won disc (129-2) and placed third in shot (42-9) and junior Mason Peltin and Esky freshman Andrew Hamlin shared second in high jump (6-0).
Esky junior Ben Sands placed third in the 400 at a season-best 52.95.
Sophomore Sam Moose was Manistique’s leader with a third in disc (119-6) and shot (42-2).
The Eskymos and Braves visit Kingsford for today’s Great Northern Conference meet at 4:30 p.m. Gladstone then hosts the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet Thursday.
