ESCANABA — Junior Kamrie Scott and senior Danni Hughes led the way for Escanaba girls golf as it came away with a first place finish at the GNC 9-hole on Thursday at the Escanaba Country Club.
Escanaba girls finished with 195 points with Scott finishing with a 44 and a 47 from Hughes. Menominee came in second with 221 points, Marquette was third with 223, Gladstone was fourth with 252 and Kingsford rounded out the girls field with 253.
On the boys side, Marquette finished on top posting a score of 148. Kingsford was second with 157, Escanaba was third with 158, Gladstone was fourth with 162 and Menominee was fifth with 171.
Scott had a nice putt at No. 12.
“I thought the course was in really good shape today,” Scott said. “I had a nice shot just before the water, then the second shot got it almost on the green then chipped it close for the par putt.
Hughes had a nice par on the par five at 16.
“Our team has really good depth on the girls end,” Eskymos coach Brian Robinette said. “Danni is a tremendous player and has improved so much over the last year.”
Gladstone freshman Alex Prins had a good putt for par in the ninth hole.
“It felt good to get a par early and get on a good start,” Prins said. “I have seen improvement and today was better than my last GNC meet.”
Rory Johnson also posted a score of 39 for the Braves. Johnson had a nice put for birdie on the par five at one.
“I had a pretty good drive on the first hole,” Johnson said. “Got to within 10 feet with the seven iron missed the putt but rebounded to get the birdie putt.”
Escanaba sophomore Carson Artley backed up his 37 score yesterday at Sweetgrass with another 37 on Thursday including a nice birdie shot at nine.
“Nice to have some good conditions today,” Artley said. “I had a nice drive at nine and gave myself a nice chip shot for birdie.”
Escanaba junior Graham Johnson had a pair of birdies at holes one and five,
“Graham is our junior captain,” Robinette said. “We have been continuing to put in the hard work to get up there with Marquette. These guys know what it takes and they do all I can ask from them.
Gladstone continued to see growth as Matt Meyer, Deegan Miron and Braidyn Miron all posted a score of 42.
“We have a very solid boys team this year,” Braves coach Erik Dalgord said. “They are great players. They all put their time in over the summer to get better and it is really fun to get to watch them develop as players.”
