ESCANABA — Over 70 golfers made their way to the Escanaba Country Club for Escanaba Invitational here Thursday.
Escanaba picked up the win on the girls side with an overall score of 386. On the boys side it was Marquette coming in first with a score of 298.
“Our girls maintained their momentum as a title contending team,” Eskymos’ coach Brian Robinette said. “They are playing very well under pressure and many of our girls posted scores in the 40’s on the front nine and that sets them up for good results.”
On the girls side, Menominee was second as a team with a score of 456, Marquette was third with 460, Escanaba 2 was fourth with 512 and Gladstone rounded out the top five with a score of 548.
Escanaba junior Kamrie Scott shot a 91 on the day that was the second best score on the girls side behind Menominee junior Lexi Marineau who posted an 89. Escanaba senior Danni Hughes finished right behind Scott posting an overall score of 92 including a birdie on the second hole. Senior Emerson Salo had the fourth best overall score at 100 and Escanaba’s Lily VanDamme had a 113.
On the boys side Escanaba was second with a total score of 311, Gladstone was third with 312, Menominee was fourth with 328, Sault Ste. Marie was tied for fifth with Escanaba 2, Powers North Central was seventh with 357 and Hannahville and Manistique were tied for eighth at 398.
“Our boys had some rough patches today,” Robinette said. “We were able to end the invite on a positive note as Graham Johnson had three birdies on the back nine. We are working very hard to challenge Marquette. They shot under 300 today which is incredible for a high school golf team so we have to keep building off of every meet. We have a lot of talent and with hard work and time we will get there.”
Gladstone junior Owen Gereau posted an overall score of 72 which was one behind the 71 by Marquette senior Kaled Chipelewsl. Graham Johnson had the third best score of the day with a 74 tied with Marquette junior Boden Moore.
Gladstone senior Deegan Miron finished with a 77 and Gladstone freshman Alex Prins finished with a score of 80.
Mid Peninsula’s top shooter was Christian VanDamme with a score of 75. North Central had Alex Pipkorn post an overall score of 80 three strokes better than his brother Nathan who posted an 83.
“I didn’t have a single birdie today,” Nathan Pipkorn said. “On the first hole I had a 15-foot putt for eagle but ended up with a three-putt for par.”
