Broncos battle, fall short at ND Invite

FELCH — The Bark River-Harris track and field teams were in the title hunt, but couldn’t quite catch Crystal Falls Forest Park in the North Dickinson Booster Club Invitational here Wednesday.

Forest Park’s boys scored 122 points, followed by BR-H 104 and Florence-Niagara, Wis. 99.

The Forest Park girls tallied 131.75. They were followed by BR-H 112.75 and the host Nordics 96.75.

BR-H sophomore Gionni McDonough won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.5 seconds and 300 in a personal-best 44.41. He also helped the Broncos take the 400 relay and place second in the 800 on this sunny and mild afternoon.

“I think my starts were pretty good in both races,” he said. “I definitely felt quicker today. It was more bearable than it was at Manistique (April 25). It wasn’t fun running in the rain last week. In the rankings there was a kid higher than me. I wanted to beat his time and I think I did that.”

Classmate Ben Knauf ran away with the 1600 in a season-best 4:52.55 and was runner-up in the 800 (2:12.92).

“Ben really worked hard to pace himself,” BR-H coach William Soper said. “He kept pushing himself. I’m happy with our overall performance. I think we improved for the most part. A couple kids placed for the first time today. Our 1600 relay shaved eight seconds off from its previous best and our sprint relays ran season-best times.”

Junior Cody Roll provided the Broncos with an additional first in the 100 (12.02).

Powers North Central senior Lane Gorzinski captured the 200 (25.29) and placed second in the 100 (12.15) and classmate Spencer Willa took shot put (39-5.5).

Forest Park sophomore Vic Guiliani copped long jump (18-1) and high jump (5-8). Senior brother Kevin Guiliani captured discus (130-4) and Gabriel Quevedo took pole vault (9-6).

Sophomore Izaiah Tarter won the 3200 (11:42.85) and helped Forest Park take the 3200 relay. Stephenson junior Canon Kuntze was runner-up in the open 3200 (11:53.9).

Hannahville got its best finishes in the 400 and 3200 relay where it placed third.

Florence-Niagara junior Truth Setner won the 400 (55.96) with Vic Guiliani runner-up (56.23).

BR-H sophomore Mira Johnson took girls’ pole vault by matching her personal-best leap of 8-6.

Classmate Emma Zawada won the 100 (13.9) and helped the Broncos sweep the sprint relays.

“We wanted to spread the kids in different events,” BR-H coach Emily Soper said. “It helped that this was a real nice day. There was a gentle breeze and we had a lot of good performances. A lot of kids got PRs. Callie (Flagstadt) had a nice day and our sprint relays did really well. I’m excited for (the Escanaba Invitational) Friday.”

Junior Julia Nault, also part of the winning sprint relays, took second in the 100 (14.11) and 200 (29.1).

North Central got runner-up finishes from freshman Natalie Willa in shot (29.11.75) and junior Maycee Murray in high jump (4-2).

Stephenson sophomore Caitlyn Johnson won shot (30-11) and disc (82-5.25) and junior teammate Faith Cappaert took the 400 in a personal-best 1:01.92 and anchored the winning 1600 relay.

“I didn’t do the 3200 relay and was fresher today,” Cappaert said. “I hadn’t run the 400 this year, but it was a PR. I’m happy with that. We have a big meet tomorrow (Thursday’s Rapid River Invite) and I was saving myself for that. It’s good to get nice weather today, although it didn’t really help for the 400. I actually do prefer the cold weather for running.”

Freshman Nora Parker added a first for the Eagles in the 800 (2:36.88).

Forest Park sophomore Vienna Price copped the 1600 (6:12.19) and was runner-up in the 800 (2:40.14) and junior Elsie Williams took first in the 200 (28.7) and long jump (14-8) and second in the 400 (1:04.11).

Fellow Trojans’ junior Lily Sarder added a second in long jump (14-1) with BR-H sophomore Carli Erickson third (13-4).

In the 3200, North Dickinson sophomore Aunika Lindholm won in 13:37.41, followed by junior teammate Raina Ledzian (14:29.37) and Flagstadt (14:32.36).

Senior Kamden Johnson was Florence-Niagara’s leader, taking the 100 hurdles (16.02) and 300s (49.53).
