RAPID RIVER — A career-high 28 point performance by junior Aubrey Olson led Rapid River girls basketball to a 49-30 victory over Mid Peninsula in a Division 4 district quarterfinal here Monday.

“She came to win tonight,” Rockets’ coach Holly Frisk said of Olson. “I told her I wanted her to be the floor leader and take control of the game. She’s capable of it. She has shown me in practice, and tonight she had the confidence to take control of the game.”

The Rockets got to work early after falling behind 4-0. Junior Aubrey Olson responded with 10 straight Rockets’ points, including a 3-pointer from the wing to put the Rockets up 10-4.

“I was so happy that everyone came to play tonight,” Olson said. “I scored a lot of points, but my teammates did too, and our defensive intensity was great. We played the passing lanes well and made it tough for their offense.”

In the second quarter, Emma Sundling knocked down a mid-range jumper to extend the Rockets’ lead to 17-8. Sundling had nine points in the contest.

Olson continued to dominate the Wolverines coming out of the halftime break as she knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing extending the Rockets’ lead to 25-13.

After a mid-range jumper by Sundling made the score 27-15. Olson scored back-to-back layups and the Rockets led 31-15

The Wolverines answered with a 9-0 run highlighted by a 3-pointer by Bethany Tourangeau to cut the deficit to 31-24.

The Wolverines were led by sophomore Abigale Klee with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The Wolverines committed 33 turnovers compared to 14 for the Rockets.

“It was typical of what happened throughout the year,” Wolverines’ coach Eric VanDamme said. “We have a lot of young kids handling the ball and we were not able to handle their pressure.”

Olson had seven of her 28 points in the fourth quarter including back-to-back layups to put the Rockets up 47-28. Olson had seven rebounds, four assists and four steals to go along with her 28 points.

The Rockets are scheduled to travel to Munising Wednesday in district semifinal action.
