Bright lights fail to phase ice racers in night action

GWINN — It was a spectacular night under the lights as the Upper Michigan Ice Racing Association held its second night race of the 2025 season here Saturday.
The race was full of intense action including Grayson Corkin picking up his fifth heat feature sweep in the 50cc bike class.
“I just went out there and raced fast,” Corkin said. “It always feels good when you get the win.”
Daniel Stewart finished second after a nice run in heat race action where he came from seventh on the grid to finish third. Brinley Barto finished third in feature action and Lilah Wagner and Jase Kay rounded out the top five.
Chet Barto grabbed a sweep in the 65cc bike class as he held off Corkin who came in second. Levi Jacques finished third and Brinley Barto and Stewart finished up the top five.
Only three bikes competed in the 85cc bike class, with Riley Bennett taking the heat and feature sweep. Chet Barto came in second and Henry Mallory finished third.
Brennon Detiege raced his way to the checkered flag in the 400 rubber class. Ethan Manninen came in second and picked up a win in heat race action. Hunter Couillard finished third. Caden Mattonen and Marty Sundholm rounded out the top five. Al Couillard and Cody Nelson advanced from the semi-feature and Austin Byczek picked up the other heat win but feature trouble saw him drop nine spots on the starting grid finishing 10th.
Ben Heiting had a big day in the B-Rubber class as he swept the heat and feature. Derek Pelkola finished second and Cole Shepard was third. Bobby Davis and Sebastian Bezemek rounded out the top five. Andrew Hill and Byczek advance from the semi-feature and Jake Micheau won the other heat race but dropped from second to eighth on the feature grid.
Cash Pangborn had a stellar night winning in three classes. Pangborn got the sweep in the 250 bike class holding off Ethan Maksim who came in second and Cory Pangborn finished third.
Sam Rasmussen picked up a heat and feature sweep in the A-Rubber class.
“It is always fun getting to race at night,” Rasmussen said. “Track was very challenging tonight but Gwinn is a great track and a great community that comes out to support us.”
Pelkola came in second and Travis Corkin finished third and won the other heat race. Zack Kevern came in fourth and Levi Leutz finished fifth after advancing from the semi-feature with Detiege.
Shepard picked up a feature win in the C-Rubber class with Micheau finishing second and winning his heat race. Heiting finished third. Cody Vandermissen and Ryan Lindbert rounded out the top five. Byczek and Mattonen advanced from the B-Main. Ethan Manninen won the other heat race.
Rasmussen also got a sweep in the Outlaw Rubber class. Levi Leutz worked his way from eighth on the grid to finish second ahead of Kody Peterson who battled hard finishing third and winning his heat race.
“I had fun battling with Kody in the outlaw class,” Leutz said. “It was a tight race. I made a nice run and got to second (place).”
Tyler Johnson and Nathan Nelson rounded out the top five.
Leah Leutz found her way into the winners column as she picked up a sweep in the Women’s studded class.
“It was nice to get out and race under the lights,” Leah Leutz said. “The track conditions tonight were good and made for good racing.”
Christy Fitzgerald came in second and Cassie Callahan finished third. Kelsey Polequin and Alicia Lancour completed the field.
In The A-Studded class, Mike Palm picked up the feature win over Dan Woodruff. Woodruff did pick up the win in heat race action.
In the B-Studded class, Palm picked up the feature win over Brandan Krauss who finished second and won the heat race. Lance Kay finished third.
Parker Cain picked up a win in the outlaw studded class as he held on against Woodruff.
Krauss did pick up the sweep in the C-Studded class. Keith Stone came in second and Logan Keyes finished third. Butch Lancour came in fourth to finish the field.
Kaydyn Lindbert picked up the feature win in the utility quad race. Brandon Starnes came in second and won the heat race. Joe Racicot finished third and Eddie Forslund and Devin Racicot rounded out the top five.
Trae Nyquist picked up his sixth feature win of the season in the 0-50 rubber quad race. Declan Devries came in second and Nolan Stewart came in third. Stetson White finished in fourth and Skylar Bower came in fifth and won the heat race.
Harlow Bezemek picked up the feature win in the 0-100 rubber race. Brooklyn Greenier came in second and won a heat race while Carson Wagner finished third and won the other heat race. Abbie Lantagne and Jeffery Sustarich rounded out the top five. Levi Jacques and Lilah Wagner advanced from the semi-feature.
Jordyn Pelkola picked up the feature win in the women’s rubber class. Leah Leutz came in second and won her heat race. Sierra Nummilien finished third and Vikki Richer and Andrea Couillard rounded out the top five.
Chase Richer picked up a heat and feature sweep in the Jr. rubber class. Leah Leutz came in second and Bentley Richer finished third. Ryland Boshears finished fourth and Niko Ginter finished fifth after advancing through the semi-feature along with Caiden Lancour. Marty Sundholm won the other heat race but did not finish the feature.
Riley Bower picked up a sweep in the 0-124 modified rubber race. Landon Harris came in second and Harlow Bezemek finished third. Abbie Lantagne and Landyn Petroick rounded out the top five.
The A-Bike class saw Cash Pangborn come away with the heat and feature sweep.
“Gwinn is a fun track to race at,” Cash Pangborn said. “They make the ice there, so track conditions are usually very smooth and good to race on.”
Tyler Livingston came in second and Kyle Meiers finished third Evan Chouinard and Ethan Ebben rounded out the top five.
In B-Bike action, Evan Chouinard picked up the sweep. Ethan Maksim came in second and Tyler Melchiori finished third. Ryan Harris and Eddie Forslund rounded out the top five.
Melchiori picked up the feature win in C-Bike action Saturday. Ryan Harris came in second and won the heat race. Jesse Liss finished third and Eddie Forslund and Carter Stansky rounded out the top five.
Cash Pangborn picked up a sweep in the outlaw bike class.
“This win felt really good,” Cash Pangborn said. “I had a battle out there with Tyler and was able to beat him for the first time.”
Tyler Livingston raced his way to a second place finish and Kyle Meiers came in third. Jordan Blese and Ebben rounded out the top five.
In vet bike action, Kyle Meiers picked up the heat and feature sweep. Cory Pangborn came in second and Gordy Halsey finished third.
In the 200cc bike class, Ethan Maksim picked up the heat and feature sweep. Ryan Harris came in second and Jesse Liss finished third. Riley Bennett and Sundholm rounded out the top five.
Brennon Detiege picked up the feature win in the 300 rubber class. Hunter Couillard came in second and won the heat race. Al Couillard finished third and Joey Stankowicz and Tyler Johnson rounded out the top five.
