Sports flashback Oct. 27-Nov. 2
Oct. 27, 1984 — The Gladstone Braves ended their football season with a 32-6 triumph over the Munising Mustangs. Brian Pelon completed 8-of-11 passes for 192 yards, including three aerials to Troy L. Carlson for 108. Scott Johnson plowed through the muddy turf for 70 yards on 22 carries, including a pair of one-yard touchdowns. John Chenier added a one-yard TD run. Doug Leisenring caught a 25-yard TD pass and Carlson ran 14 yards for another score.
The Rapid River Rockets also enjoyed a successful season-finale in a 13-0 victory over the DeTour Red Raiders. Brent Berglund scored on a four-yard run and Tom Fix added a 38-yard TD run.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos weren’t as fortunate as they dropped a 29-18 decision to the Bessemer Speedboys. Emerald Mercier provided the Broncos with a 26-yard TD run. Todd Sovey passed 30 yards to David Erickson for another score and Ron Kleiman rushed for 107 yards, including a three-yard TD.
Wes Orr, Jr. of Manistique sank a hole-in-one at Indian Lake Golf Club, using a 4-wood on the 183-yard fourth hole.
Oct. 29, 1984 — The Powers North Central Jets clinched the Wolverine Conference title with a 20-6 triumph over the Rock Mid Peninsula Wolverines. The Jets secured the decision on Rod Wells’ four-yard pass to Mike Wells in the final 30 seconds and Steve Wheeler ran for two scores.
Oct. 31, 1984 — Hope Kallio scored 16 points, helping the Trenary girls post a 64-58 basketball victory over BR-H. Stacy Rucinski added 15 points and 15 rebounds and Sharon Thompson finished with 14 points. Clara Oswald led the Broncos with 22 points and 21 boards and Jeanne Getzloff had 16 points.
Nov. 2, 1984 — Amy Hastings hit 15 points, leading the Manistique Emeralds in a 47-39 upset victory over the Iron Mountain Mountaineers. Nancy Krusic added 12.
Nov. 3, 1984 — The Escanaba Eskymos provided coach Jerry Cvengros with a career-ending victory as they squeezed past the Traverse City Trojans 43-42. Jim Myllyla scored the game-winner on a quarterback sneak with three seconds left to play. Myllya also threw 25, 15 and three-yard TD passes to Scott Peterson and another for four yards to Paul Mattson. Scott Johnson dashed 83 yards on the opening kickoff for another score.
Oct. 28, 1989 — Esky qualified for the Class A state football playoffs, earning a 27-0 triumph over the Kingsford Flivvers. Eric Braun ran for 103 yards, including a 13-yard TD run and one-yard TD plunge. Bill McGovern added 78, including a 59-yard TD dash and Lonnie Slaga scored on a 23-yard run. Nick Bink passed for 91 yards.
Gladstone ended its season with a 22-13 victory at Munising. Scott Kelly threw an eight-yard TD pass to Scott Creten. Rick McIntosh added a 21-yard TD run and Dan Howes scored on a 10-yard run.
Oct. 31, 1989 — Craig Lancour scored on an eight-yard run and caught a 10-yard TD pass from Jamie Rydquist, leading the Rapid River Rockets to a season-ending 23-14 triumph at Pickford. Chuck Johnson added a 30-yard TD run.
Nov. 1, 1989 — Sherri Nemacheck hit 18 points as the Gladstone girls posted a 64-60 basketball victory over Esky. Lori Creten added 16 points and 16 rebounds. Jennifer Ostlund scored 13 points and Debbie Rudenberg had 10. Jenny Howard and Mary Tobin paced the Eskymos with 12 points each.
The Carney-Nadeau Wolves posted their 62nd straight regular-season victory in a 53-36 conquest of Rock Mid Peninsula. Jill Wetthuhn scored 16 points for the Wolves.
Barb Klee hit 22 points as BR-H squeezed past Big Bay de Noc 75-74. Carrie Herioux hit 18 and Rhonda LaVigne tallied 12. Jennifer Thill led the Black Bears with 14 and Heather Peterson had 13.
