Sports flashback Sept. 30-Oct. 5
Sept. 29, 1984 — Dave Cvengros set a school record in receiving, helping the Escanaba Eskymos post a 41-7 football victory over the Alpena Wildcats. The senior tight end snagged eight passes for 123 yards, running his career receiving total to 49. Jim Myllyla hit 10-of-17 passes for 178 yards and Paul Rodman connected on both of his aerials for 25. Myllyla tossed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Scott Peterson and scored on a one-yard run.
Esky rushed for 201 yards, led by Steve Flath, who ran for 57, including an 11-yard TD. Scott Johnson scored on an 80-yard kickoff return. Tony Vanlerberg added a four-yard TD run and Erik Bessonen got a TD on a 35-yard return on a fumble recovery.
Jerry Burnis ran two yards for a TD and caught a 25-yard pass for another score, leading the Manistique Emeralds past the Stephenson Eagles 20-14 for their first victory this season. Burnis finished with 106 yards rushing and Duane Smith added a one-yard TD run.
Oct. 1, 1984 –The Gladstone Braves won for the first time this season in a 14-12 upset victory over Marquette. Scott Johnson scored on a two-yard run and Brian Pelon tossed a 27-yard TD pass to Troy L. Carlson, who finished with 71 yards rushing on just five carries. Pelon completed 9-of-14 passes for 88 yards, including five to Doug Leisenring for 60.
The Gladstone boys’ cross country team was crowned champion of the Escanaba Invitational with 51 points. Runner-up Esky scored 62 and third-place Menominee had 88.
Menominee’s Fran Champeau set the course record at Ludington Park, covering the three-mile course in 15:53. Gladstone’s Ray Theoret was runner-up, followed by Esky’s Dan Beaudry and Gary Gregg.
Ishpeming Westwood took the girls’ title with 57 points, followed by Negaunee 75 and Esky 89. Iron Mountain’s Tracy Babcock also set a course record at 17:44. Her sister Wendy placed second and Esky’s Lorraine Boucher was fourth.
Oct. 3, 1984 — Tammy Cartwright scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, leading the Gladstone girls to a 56-46 basketball triumph over Rock Mid Peninsula. Dawn Farrell hit 15 points and Carmella Wilson added nine. Kristin Depuydt paced the Wolverines with 19 points.
Oct. 5, 1984 — Britt Lindholm defeated Kingsford’s Shari Peebles in overtime in No. 4 singles, enabling the Escanaba girls to gain a share of the Great Northern Conference tennis title. Esky and Kingsford scored 16 points apiece. They were led by Marquette five, Menominee four, West Iron County three and Ironwood zero.
Esky’s Anne O’Donnell topped Kingsford’s Monica Cale 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles final and Cindy Mathieson and Linda Carne outlasted Marquette’s Gabrielle Fassbender and Beth Richard 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 for the No. 2 doubles championship.
Sept. 29, 1989 — Jennifer Thill scored 14 points, leading the Big Bay de Noc girls to a 50-39 victory over Rapid River. Jenny Nelson hit 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Rockets.
Sept. 30, 1989 — Scott Odgers scored three touchdowns to go with three quarterback sacks as Esky romped to a 33-8 football triumph over Alpena. Eric Braun led the Eskymos in rushing with 88 yards. Nick Bink ran for 67 yards and hit 4-of-13 passes for 37. Odgers finished with 48 yards on the ground.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos recorded their fifth straight victory in a 33-2 conquest of Powers North Central. Adam Kositze ran 26 times for 163 yards, including TDs of 16 and two, and caught a 17-yard pass from RIch Bugay for another score. Bugay finished 5-of-10 passing for 95 yards and two TDs and Dan Peterson scored on a 62-yard dash. North Central’s Brad Presseau tackled back-up QB Mike Richer in the end zone for a safety.
