Sports flashback Oct. 6-12

Oct. 6, 1994 — Phil Croasdell hit the game-winning shot with eight seconds remaining, lifting Davis Land Survey past Engineered Machine Products 54-53 in the Escanaba Basketball League. Jason Lippens, who drained five 3-point shots, led Davis with 19 points in the Class B contest. Paul Peterson had 14. Chris Olsen scored 15 points and Steve Erickson added 14 for EMP.

Oct. 7, 1994 — Jenny Folcik joined the 1,000-point club, leading the Bark River-Harris girls to a 56-39 basketball triumph over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears. Folcik scored 20 points. Jenny Wienckowski added 12 points, 11 rebounds and six steals and Beth Ives had 10 points and six steals. Lisa Farley led the Black Bears with 17 points.

Oct. 8, 1994 — The Escanaba Eskymos put together a last-ditch 71-yard drive, earning a 14-8 homecoming football victory over the Cheboygan Chiefs. Scott Victorson scored the game-winner on a nine-yard pass from Joe Freidhoff in the final 27 seconds.

The Gladstone Braves scored 27 points in the second half in a 39-16 triumph over the Gwinn Modeltowners. The Braves, who led 12-10 at hafltime, extended their lead to nine points on a touchdown run by Ryan Peterson. Ed Gauthier added a 30-yard TD pass to John Tomasoski, then ran 35 yards for a score. Derek LaFave ended the scoring on a two-yard run. Peterson rushed 12 times for 170 yards and Gauthier was 8-of-12 passing for 125 yards and ran for 64.

Oct. 11, 1994 — The Escanaba girls captured their sixth straight Upper Peninsula Class A-B tennis title with 15 points. Kingsford and Menominee tied for second with 10. Ann Rosemurgy claimed the No. 2 singles title with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Kingsford’s Andrea Corollo. Theresa Alimenti defeated Kingsford’s Erin Pirkola 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 final and Shannon Makosky beat Kingsford’s Colleen Downs 6-2, 6-0 for the No. 4 title.

Oct. 12, 1994 — Amanda Tukesbrey scored 13 points as the Powers North Central girls posted a 41-35 basketball victory over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves. Angie Fleetwood tallied 11 points and 14 rebounds and Joanna Butkovich grabbed 11 boards for the Jets who beat the Wolves for the first time in eight years. Amy Baumler paced the Wolves with 18 points.

Oct. 6, 2004 — Melanie Meyers scored 12 points to go with a career-high seven rebounds as the Esky girls posted a 63-27 basketball triumph over the Negaunee Miners. Jami Acker added 10 points.

Cassi Rushford hit 13 points, leading the Rapid River Rockets past the Carney-Nadeau Wolves 36-27. Ashley Folcik paced the Wolves with 10 points. Carly Benson added nine points, nine boards and three blocked shots.

Oct. 8, 2004 — The Gladstone boys won their invitational cross country meet, edging Escanaba 48-53. Chris Davis won the 3.1-mile race at the Gladstone Golf Club in 17:32. Teammate Alvin Moore placed sixth (18:33) and Esky’s Jim Anderson was seventh (18:34).

Gladstone also took the girls’ championship with 23 points. Runner-up Esky had 55. Esky’s Stephanie Ostrenga earned top individual honors at 20:39, followed by Gladstone’s Kaili Walker (21:16) and Bethany Sheffer (21:43).

Laura Hoholik collected 18 points and 16 boards, helping the Manistique girls post a 48-41 basketball triumph over the Ishpeming Hematites. Tessa Marks added 16 points and Bonnie Rubick had nine assists.

Oct. 9, 2004 — Cevin Cosby and Kristjan Britton combined for 131 yards rushing and two touchdowns, leading the Gladstone Braves to a 19-6 football triumph over the Escanaba Eskymos. Cosby dashed for a 72-yard touchdown and Britton added a 20-yard score. Ed Knock scored on a 44-yard run Jordan Nardi got Esky’s TD on a 42-yard run.

Brian Moyle of Escanaba rolled the first 300 game this season in Delta County at Bowl-a-rama Lanes. His gem was followed by 181 and 190 games for a 671 series.
