Esky girls’ tennis bests IM, U.P. Finals today

ESCANABA–In its regular season finale, Escanaba girls’ tennis trekked to Iron Mountain and came home winners in all eight matches in two sets or less.

Maggie Martin earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Avea Brown in No. 1 singles action. Samantha Korpi earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alysia Wood in No. 2 singles. Sophie Hill triumphed over Jacalyn Rowe 6-3, 6-3 in No. 3 singles action.

Sonya Maki and Anna Martin continue to get stronger, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over IM’s tandem of Betsy Vanegas and Veronica Stanchina.

“No. 1 doubles looked especially polished today,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “They have been working on some specific strategies over the past week and it was to see them put those in play successfully.”

Danni Hughes and Molly Smale conquered Bella Pickett and Lindsey Lewandowski 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles action while Brooklyn Hackleman and Aubrey Elliott defeated Emelia Miles and Sarah Frodien 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 doubles.

IM forfeited action No. 4 singles and doubles action.

Now the Eskymos prepare to defend their Division 1 U.P. Championship on Wednesday. The action begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Escanaba and Gladstone.
