Sports flashback Aug. 4-10

Aug. 4, 1984 — The Gladstone Senior Boys’ Little League All-Stars fell to Midland 6-3 in the state baseball finals. Wes Butch had two hits and Brian Pelon rapped a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kelly Dementer absorbed the loss, striking out three, walking five and allowing eight hits.

The Gladstone Girls’ All-Stars also fell in the state softball finals, dropping a 5-3 decision to Georgetown. Carrie Derouin led Gladstone with two hits. Marie Searle scored twice on walks and Michelle Nelson scored on a single by Kristin Cole. Debbie Trotter took the loss.

Aug. 8, 1984 — Al Richer of Wilson was crowned this year’s track champion at Superiorland Raceway in Sands with 4.660 points. He was followed by Harley Hendrickson of Sands (4.430), Charlie Peterson (4,300), Clayton Peterson (3,565) and Tim Peterson (3,340), all of Rapid River.

Aug. 10, 1984 — A furious comeback by the Gladstone Junior Boys’ Little League All-Stars fell a run short as they were eliminated from the Midwest Regional baseball tournament in a 19-18 loss to Ohio at Sioux City, Ia. Lane Robinson had three hits, including two triples for Gladstone, which trailed 15-3 in the fourth inning. Lonnie Popour ripped a triple and double. Todd Johnson, Tim Schafer, Jamie Lyle and Kevin Beauchamp also had two hits.

The Escanaba Cubs got eliminated from the state American Legion baseball tournament, falling to defending champ Allen Park 9-5 and Auburn Heights 7-3. Scott Wille had two hits in each game. Brad Belanger added a pair in the nightcap and Rich Hubert ripped a home run against Allen Park.

Aug. 4, 1994 — The Escanaba Major Girls’ All-Stars settled for runner-up honors in the state softball tournament, dropping 7-0 and 3-1 decisions to host Essexville-Hampton. Esky scored its lone run on Amy Krause’s double and Leigh Ann LaFave took the loss in the nightcap, allowing 10 hits and two walks. Katie O’Connell had Esky’s only hit off Kayla Botts, who fanned nine and walked eight in the opener. O’Connell absorbed the loss, giving up five hits, striking out four and walking three.

John Koskinen of Baraga placed 10th in the Junior Amateur state golf tournament, finishing with 152 strokes at Bay Valley Golf Club near Bay City. Casey VanDamme of Terrace Bluff led area golfers at 161. Joe Darmogray of Gladstone and Aaron Schmidt of Terrace Bluff had 167 and Dominic Benetti of Escanaba shot 168.

Aug. 5, 1994 — Harley Herrick concluded a 20-year softball career, helping Rapid River Swallow Inn clinch the Central Division title in a 25-5 conquest of Gladstone Wally’s Bar in the Delta County Travel League. Herrick went 5-for-5 and rapped two home runs in his farewell appearance. Tony Vanlerberghe homered three times and finished 4-for-4. Dave Gendron, Don Chartier and Troy Randall also clubbed home runs. Gendron and Bill Aper added four hits each and Chartier had three for the winners, who unleashed a 31-hit attack.

Aug. 8, 1994 — Dennis Niemi of Neenah, Wis. captured the Men’s Class A title, taking a 6-3, 6-1 decision from Joe Havican of Marquette in the Michigan-Wisconsin Open tennis tournament. Liz Nobert defeated Debbie O’Connell of Escanaba 6-4, 6-1 for the women’s championship and Laura Hickner of Esky outlasted Annie Rosemurgy 6-2, 6-7 (7-3), 6-3 in the girls’ 16-18 final.
