Mabie starts 2024 cross country season with win in Munising
MUNISING — Dan Goss accomplished what no other high school cross country runner was able to do within the past 22 years here Tuesday.
The Munising senior covered the hilly 3.1-mile course in 16:58, becoming the first to break the 17-minute barrier on the Valley Spur Cross Country Ski Trails during that span.
Escanaba senior Alisha Mabie held off Engadine eighth-grader Molly McNamara for the girls’ title on this sunny and cool day in the Larissa Vartti Invitational.
Munising was crowned boys’ champion with 52 points, followed by Engadine 89 and Manistique 116.
“We had a few opening day jitters, but I think we’ll be all right,” Manistique coach Rebekah Gilroy said.
The Stephenson girls won with 89 points and Powers North Central edged Munising 96-98 for runner-up honors.
“We lost five girls through graduation,” Stephenson coach Kate Kuntze said. “This is kind of a rebuilding year, although they did well today. We had only a week of training. We’re happy for Adrian Anderson who medalled in her first meet. The boys are pretty solid. Canon ran a real good time. Engadine looked good. They’re going to be a team to watch.”
Goss was followed by classmate Trevor Nolan at 17:54 and Stephenson’s Canon Kuntze (18:19).
“I wasn’t really expecting to go under 17 on this course,” Goss said. “The coaches prepared us well for this meet, and I spent the last couple weeks getting ready. I wanted to make a statement. Trevor ran a good race. It definitely helps to have somebody here to push me. He keeps me going in practice.”
Mable completed the course in 21:46.38, less than a half-second ahead of McNamara. Stephenson’s Faith Cappaert placed third at 22:22 with North Central’s Hope Varoni fourth (22:33).
This marked the first race in nearly a year for Mabie, who missed her junior track season due to a stress fracture.
“I had a lot of physical therapy, trusted in God’s plan and did a lot of cross training,” she said. “The Engadine girl pushed me the whole way. I tried to make a move on the hills. I worked on hills before, but these were hard. Although, this was definitely a confidence builder. The conditions were good. It wasn’t windy.”
McNamara said she wanted to get in front early.
“I was able to stay in front for about a mile which gave me some confidence,” she added. “We were kind of pacing off each other. This is a big learning experience. I was a little nervous before the meet.”
Junior Maya Carlson was Manistique’s leader in sixth (23:54) and Rapid River’s Emma Sundling placed ninth (25:19).
North Central’s Wes Knauf placed fourth in the boys’ race in 18:33.
“This is a good start to my senior season,” he said. “I’m right where I was at the U.P. (Division 1) Finals last year which is encouraging. The summer went all right. I had a lot of stuff going on, such as work. I didn’t get as much training in as last year, but I guess it was enough. I will be training more consistently from here on out.”
Manistique senior Ben Gilroy (19:43.03) edged Gwinn’s Thomas Jenkins by a step for seventh and Esky’s William Weise took ninth (19:59).
