Mikey D’s Beer Cave rallies to conquer Negaunee Hubbard’s Marsh
ESCANABA — Mikey D’s Beer Cave overcame a slow start here Monday night as it rallied past Negaunee Hubbard’s Marsh 8-7 in a Superiorland League baseball game.
Hubbard’s took a 6-2 lead on Jay Oberg’s ground out to short in the fifth inning before Mikey D’s answered with four runs in its half of the inning.
Nick Javurek’s single along the leftfield line brought Mikey D’s within three runs.
Matt Richer shaved its deficit to 6-4 on a wild pitch and bases-loaded walks to player-coach Mason Korhonen and Nick Lafave tied the score.
Hubbard’s regained the lead on Brodie Caster’s single to leftfield in the sixth before Collin Arnt’s two-run single to right provided Mikey D’s with the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth.
Mikey D’s was trailing 4-1 in the fourth when Hubbard’s had a baserunner on third with one out.
The Escanaba-based team then turned a double play to end the threat.
“We brought in our infield a couple times,” Korhonen said. “That was a momentum changer. We were able to get some clutch outs when we needed them.”
Mikey D’s then got within 4-2 on Kaleb Schroeder’s single to right in its half of the fourth.
Hubbard’s, taking advantage of three walks, an error and a wild pitch, scored three times in the first, then added a run on Brian Coleman’s sacrifice fly to center in the second.
Richer got Mikey D’s on the board on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second.
“Our fielding was good for the most part,” Hubbard’s manager Gary Wixtrom said. “During the past couple years our fielding has been so much more than it used to be. We’ve been in some close games, but haven’t been able to get over the hump. We weren’t getting a lot of contact with our bats.”
Mikey D’s (2-3) finished with eight hits, led by Tyler Lawson, Javurek and Sam Hall with two apiece. Hubbard’s had four, including two by losing pitcher Steve Snow.
Schroeder, who pitched five innings in relief of Korhonen, took the win. He struck out seven, walked five and allowed three runs on three hits.
Korhonen fanned two, walked four and gave up four runs on one hit through two frames.
“We had great pitching by Kaleb,” Korhonen said. “His curveball was working well and his slider was working inside. When he got ahead in the count, he did real well.
“I just didn’t pull anything down. Everything was sailing on me. Their guy was struggling in the end, although he’s a good pitcher. He was tough in the first three innings.”
Snow fanned five, walked six and surrendered eight runs on seven hits through five frames. Oberg, who faced the last four hitters, gave up a hit.
“Steve was in the military (in Kuwait),” Wixtrom said. “He looked good for just his second game back. His arm was still there, but his hips got sore and his legs were gone. We play so few games. It’s hard to get anything going. Although, this was a good game.”
Mikey D’s committed three errors and Hubbard’s had one.
Hubbard’s (0-4) hosts the Marquette County Mavericks tonight at 6:30 in Negaunee. Mikey D’s hosts the Mavericks Monday at Al Ness Field.
