April 30, 1984 – Tim and Sandy Triebold squeezed past Tony DeGrand and Dave Carrignan paddled to victory in one minute, five seconds in the Little River canoe race, edging Tony DeGrand and Dave Carignan by nine seconds.

Triebold then teamed with Joe Johnson in the Big Cedar race, winning at 1:12.31, more than three minutes ahead of Jim Larsen and Terry Brayak.

May 3, 1984 – The Gladstone boys gained top honors in a quadrangular track and field meet at Rapid River by scoring 101 points. They were followed by Rapid River 73.5, Mid Peninsula 48.5 and North Central 33. Gladstone’s Mike Gustafson won the 1600-meter run in four minutes, 50 seconds and the 3200 (10:22). North Central’ s Scott Johnson took the 300 hurdles (44.76) and long jump at 17 feet, eight inches and teammate Doug Willa captured shot put (42-10) and discus (142-7.5).

Gladstone’s girls also won with 112.5 points followed by the host Rockets 74, Mid Pen 35.5 and North Central 16. Sherri Hess led the Braves with victories in the 200 (29.43) and long jump (14-0).

The Escanaba Eskymos posted a 6-1 tennis victory over the Menominee Maroons with Don Harris taking a 7-5, 6-1 decision from Dave Antilla in No. 1 singles. Scott A. Peterson and Chris Bruce defeated Leo Backman-Steve Ebsch 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles and Erik Besonen-Dan Aiken topped Steve Hubert-Steve Venne 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

April 28, 1989 – The Escanaba girls remained undefeated with an 82-46 track and field victory over the Kingsford Flivvers. Esky’s Cheryl Jacobsen won shot put (34-9.5) and discus (94-6) and Chris Vogel took first in the 880-yard run (2:42.6) and long jump (13-7.5).

The Kingsford boys squeezed past Esky 69-68. The Eskymos had a trio of double-winners including Nick Bink who took the 100 (10.7) and 220 (24.4), Tom Bush in the 880 (2:13.1) and mile (4:57.2) and Jim Hirn in shot (47-1) and disc (134-4).

May 3, 1989 – In golf, the Escanaba boys edged Gladstone 166-175 in a dual meet. Esky’s Jon Lancour and Gladstone’s Scott Villeneuve shared medalist honors at 38 and Esky’s Brian Robinette shot 41.

Meghan Kelly shot 55 to lead the Esky girls past the Braves 226-270. Jessica Bastien was runner-up at 56, followed by Athena Trentin 57. Christa Johnson was Gladstone s leader at 63.

April 29, 1994 The Rapid River girls prevailed in a quadrangular track meet with 84 points, followed by Bark River-Harris 63, Big Bay de Noc 50 and Carney-Nadeau 32. Rapid River s Stacy Boyer was a triple-winner, taking the 100 (13.8), 200 (28.8) and 400 (1:07.6). BR-H’s Kori Gaber copped the 100 hurdles (18.1) and 300s (56.7) and Big Bay s Debbie Hermes won the 1600 (5:54.6) and 3200 (13:11.2).

Rapid River s boys swept all four relays while winning with 105 points. They were followed by C-N 67, BR-H 56 and Big Bay 24. BR-H s Marcel Potvin captured the 800 (2:13.9), 1600 (5:00.3) and 3200 (11:27.8) and Carney s Andy Gramlich took high jump (5-10) and the 300 hurdles (44.1).
