Skyline Central track finals gets soggy

STEPHENSON — Area track and field teams were no match for Mother Nature who had the final say in the Skyline Central Conference meet here Tuesday afternoon.

The Bark River-Harris girls captured their third straight title just the same by scoring 75 points in a meet stopped by thunderstorms. They were followed by Stephenson 48 and Crystal Falls Forest Park 42.

Munising’s boys won with 72 points, followed by BR-H 54 and Forest Park 48.

The boys had just completed the 400-meter dash as the storms moved into the area.

“The safety of the kids is top priority,” BR-H coach Travis Depuydt said. “The trophies and medals are secondary. We got some good performances which I think helped us get ready for the (Upper Peninsula) Finals. It’s difficult to reschedule athletic events, especially in the spring because you have final exams, graduation and other activities. There’s a lot of things going on this time of year.”

The BR-H girls tied the school record in the 800-meter relay in one minute, 48.87 seconds. Julia Olson, who was part of that relay, set a school record while placing third in the 1600 at 5:51.

Stephenson sophomore Faith Cappaert won the 1600 (5:44), followed by Forest Park freshman Vienna Price (5:46).

Senior Lauren Zawada also ran in the Broncos’ 800 relay and took second in the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 17.57.

Also part of the 800 relay were senior McKenzie Hoffmeyer and junior Marissa Ives.

“This is the same group of girls which set the school record in the 800 relay last year,” BR-H girls’ coach Jason Lockwood said. “They wanted to do it one more time as seniors, and they deserved the opportunity. We just happened to be in first place when the weather hit.”

Hoffmeyer won the 100 (13.23) and Ives was runner-up in the 100 (13.51) and long jump at 16 feet.

Carney-Nadeau senior Samantha Kedsch captured the long jump at what is believed to be a school-record leap of 16-10 and Forest Park sophomore Ava Fischer won the hurdles (17.38).

BR-H freshman Gionni McDonough copped the boys’ 110 hurdles (17.52) and helped the Broncos take second in the 400 (47.74) and 800 relays (1:41.08).

In the 1600, Munsing junior Dan Goss won at 4:43.34, followed by senior teammate Trevor Nolan (4:46.14) and BR-H freshman Ben Knauf (4:48.57).

“Ben was just a half-second away from the school record and Gionni got a nice victory in the hurdles,” Depuydt said. “Our relays also performed well.”

Forest Park freshman Vic Guiliani became a double-winner, taking the 400 (54.74) and high jump (5-8).

Most teams are idle until June 1 when they travel to Kingsford for the U.P. Finals.
