ESCANABA –When he’s on, he’s on. When he’s off, he’s off.
On April 30, 2024, Escanaba senior Bon LaChance was on, owning a no hitter through 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run off one hit with four walks and eight strikeouts in a 13-1 win over Marquette.
It’s another achievement for LaChance, who already owns the program’s record for doubles and earned First Team All-U.P. honors as a punter in football.
But who is LaChance outside of sports? Daily Press sports editor “The Big Dog” Mitch Vosburg caught up with LaChance after the win over the Sentinels.
Big Dog: You know, my grandpa always said something after I did something really well in sports, and I think it fits here: ‘eh, tolerable.’ How we feeling after this one?
Bon LaChance: I haven’t thrown strikes like that since 12U baseball. It feels goof to be controlling my self.
BD: What was working so well for you (on Tuesday)?
BL: Curveball was pretty good. Fastball… I couldn’t locate it too well, but I found the strikezone.
BD: Last time I watched you pitch was against Kingsford (on April 24). It was what it was, but what changed with you over six days?
BL: You have to realize that Kingsford was kind of a fluke. They hit one ball out of the infield in the whole (first) inning and got seven runs. You have to realize that if you do it yourself it’ll come to you. It’s just like hitting. You can’t get a hit every time. You only hit it hard and see where it goes from there.
BD: How huge is it for you guys to get a win here in this kind of manner against a team like Marquette?
BL: We needed it. We played some really good teams in Wisconsin. We had a few bad games last week and we needed this one. We have a really good team (Southgate Anderson) coming here Saturday. We’re testing ourselves early on.
BD: Is it kind of weird that your time in high school is almost over?
BL: It does feel weird, because sooner or later I’ll be able to sleep in and not nave school to worry about.
BD: Do you know what you’re going to do after high school?
BL: I’m going to Bay College to play some baseball for a year.
BD: What are you going to study?
BL: I’m going to study business communications and after that go somewhere else for finance.
BD: What makes you want to go down that path?
BL: It’s a lot cheaper. I get to play baseball basically for free. I have a lot of college credits right, so I’ll basically be a sophomore already and then I can go pursue what I want after that.
BD: How many college credits do you have?
BL: Like, 25 right now as a senior in high school.
BD: That’s pretty cool. What are you enjoying most about this baseball season so far?
BL: The nights at the hotel so far are pretty fun with all the other seniors. We haven;t had that in a long time.
BD: What’s your go-to pre-game meal?
BL: Wheelhouse from Drifter’s, of course. I’ve been saying that for three years now. Some french toast, some hashbrowns, two eggs, two pieces of toast and some bacon. That gets me going.
BD: I know time is getting close, but what do you want to accomplish before you graduate?
BL: We need to win districts this year. I would be very pleased if we win districts. Freshman year we won one, but I wasn’t really part of that, I was cheering them on. But the last two years we’ve lost by one run in the ninth inning.
