Gladstone softball sweeps Marquette

MARQUETTE –For the second straight Great Northern Conference series, Gladstone softball found itself in early deficits.

This time though, the Braves overcame both deficits. Gladstone earned a road doubleheader sweep over Marquette on Wednesday, claiming game one 9-6 in eight innings and game two 8-3.

Here’s what went down

Game one

The Braves found themselves down 5-1 after four innings. Then the purple and white seniors used the long long ball to even the odds. Montgomery Pepin and Rylee Gerow smashed two-run home runs to tie the game at five.

A sacrifice fly from Pepin gave Gladstone a 6-5 lead midway through six. The Sentinels tied it with a RBI double later in the frame. The seventh was silent, setting the stage for extra innings.

Emma Trombey, Lauren Sundquist and Reese Herioux started the top of the eight with back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Pepin blasted a fly ball with three ducks on the pond, and a Marquette error allowed two runs to score. A sacrifice fly from Gerow gave the Braves a 9-6 lead midway through eight. Gerow allowed one single in the bottom of the eighth, but slammed the door shut for the win.

Gerow finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored. She also earned the win in the circle, allowing one earned run off three hits with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work. Pepin finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. She also allowed five runs (four earned) off one hit with 10 walks and eight punchouts in 3 2/3 innings of action.

Lauren Sundquist finished 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Madison Sundquist also had a double. Trombley finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base

Game two

The Braves found themselves down 2-0 after the first inning. It also didn’t last long.

A RBI knocks from Gerow cut the deficit in half. A Marquette error on a Allie larson ground ball scored Gerow to tie the game. Then Herioux came through with a three-run single for a 5-2 lead.

The purple and white added RBI pokes from Madison Sundquist and Joelle Jordan for a 7-2 advantage. Pepin added a RBI single in the sixth for an additional security run.

Pepin also earned the win, allowing one earned run off three hits and three walks with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work. Madison Sundquist got the start. The freshman allowed two earned runs off two hits with two walks and a strikeout in 2/3 innings of work.

Pepin and Madison Sundquist each finished 2-for-4 and a RBI with the former adding a double. Gerow and Sam Drielick each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored with the latter adding a double and the former earning a RBI. Lauren Sundquist finished 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Larson and Jordan each earned a base hit, a run scored and a stolen base.
