Esky softball stays hot, sweeps Kingsford

ESCANABA -Behind four home runs and a pair of gems from the circle, Escanaba softball earned a Great Northern Conference doubleheader sweep over Kingsford Wednesday.

The Eskymos claimed game one 13-0 in five inning and claimed game two 15-0 in four frames.

“Every single player did something,” Esky skipper Andy Fields said. “It was a total team effort. It’s the little things that gets us through every game, and we’re doing more and more of them every game.”

Leading 9-0 off a RBI single from Carly Bowden, junior Katey Lamb stepped into the batter’s box with runners on the corners. Lamb wasted little time recording her second hit of the game, which also proved to be her biggest.

She cranked the first pitch she saw from Flivvers’ pitcher Reagan Cram over the leftfield fence at Abrahamson Field for a three-run home run and a 12-0 lead.

Junior Maddy Mott got the ball in the circle for Wednesday’s opener. To the surprise of few, Maddy Mott did what Maddy Mott does best: keep runners off the bases.

Mott hurled five hitless innings with a pair of walks and a trio of strikeouts.

Bowden finished 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI. Lamb finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Clara Braun finished 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI. Taylor Forvilly added two runs scored, a walk, a base hit and a stolen base. Harlee Coolman finished with three runs scored, two walks, a hit, a RBI and a stolen base. Anna Boutilier was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Carly McInerney added a base hit and a stolen base. McKenzie Engebretson went 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Esky kept momentum on its side for game two, and continued to smack the ball over the outfield fence. Bowden blasted a 2-2 pitch over the leftfield fence for a home run and a 2-0 lead in the first.

In the bottom of the second Emma Wisler showed bunt, but pulled back in time for ball one as Braun safely swiped second. Wisler clobbered the next pitch like the grill of a Ford F-150 clobbers a deer on US-2 for a two-run home run and a 4-0 Eskymo advantage.

With the advantage up to 12-0 Chloe Dubord stepped to bat with Forvilly standing on first after belting a RBI single. Dubord ran the count to 2-2, fouling off a pair of pitches after taking strike one. The sixth pitch of the at bat was smacked to left field and over the fence for a two-run home run and a 14-0 lead. McInerney scored the game-ending run on a bases loaded passed ball.

In the circle, Coolman made her first pitching appearance since she was 12 years old. She earned the win, allowing two hits, two walks and struck out two in 3 2/3 innings of work.

“She performed nicely,” Field said of Coolman. “She messes around at practice (with pitching) here and there. Decided to give her a start today and she knocked out of the park. I didn’t expect the shutout. That was awesome.

Coolman also finished 2-for-2 from the plate with a triple, two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

Dubord finished 3-for-3 with four RBI, three runs scored and was a single away from the cycle. Wisler finished 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. Forvilly was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI. Boutilier finished 2-for-4 with a triple, double, two runs scored and a RBI. McInerney finished 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI.

The Eskymos trip over the bridge for three games on Saturday in Lowell. The Eskymos collide with Lakewood at 10 a.m., Lowell at 12:15 p.m. and Rockford at 2:30 p.m.
