ESCANABA — Sophomore Lennox Peacock was on point, and Escanaba provided plenty of run support in a 10-0 win over Menominee Thursday at Al Ness Field.

“It’s nice to get back on track,” Esky coach Scott Hanson said. “That’s the positive of baseball season. You can have a rough game and come back and play on the next day. If things didn’t go well today we’re playing again Saturday, so you can’t dwell on any losses. You just move on to the next one.”

With Mikaiden Hughes and Ashton Rymkos belting singles and Cannon Arnt reaching first on a four-pitch walk, the bases were loaded for Nick Chiu.

But instead of connecting with a big hit, Chiu was hit by the second hit of his at bat to score the game’s first run. From there, it was a carousel of base runners on the path.

Chase Cloutier, Eli Gardner, Ben Johnson and Bon LaChance drew four consecutive walks to go with two passed balls. Hughes belted another single, and Esky (10-8) led 7-0 after two.

Esky loaded the bases to start the third when Nolan Bink reached on an error and Cloutier and Gardner reached via walk. The carousel kick started again when Johnson was hit by a pitch and LaChance hit a sacrifice fly to balloon the lead to 9-0.

Peacock kept the Maroons at bay in the batter’s box, throwing one of his best games of the 2024 season. Outside of a single allowed in the first and third innings, Peacock left Menominee batters frustrated in the batter’s box.

Peacock struck out and walked two in five shutout innings.

“We were able to get Peacock some work in a less stressful environment,” Hanson said. “We’ve put him up against the best teams we played all the way through the year. We thought it was a good idea to get him a lighter outing today, which I thought was healthy for him.”

Hughes finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Rymkos finished 1-for-1 with a run scored. Gardner drew three walks. Cloutier scored three times and drew two walks.

Up next for the Eskymos is a triangular showdown on Saturday. Esky faces Sault Ste. Marie at 10:30 a.m. and Kingsford at 2:30 p.m..

The only thing fans can know for sure is that Kingsford pitcher Gavin Trevillien will not be on the bump this weekend after tossing 98 pitches in a 5-2 loss to Gladstone Wednesday. Everything else remains a mystery in what will serve as a preview for June 1’s district in Cheboygan.

“It’ll be really interesting to see from either team, and kind of us to, who’s showing their hand going into districts,” Hanson said. “It’s kind of like a pre-district. Everyone gets a chance to look at each other a bit.”

Thursday was also Parent’s Night at Al Ness Field. Parents of varsity players were honored in a ceremony between the varsity and junior varsity games. For a self-funded program which relies heavily on fundraising established by parents, it’s recognition that’s well deserved.

“Our parents are unbelievably supportive,” Hanson said. “I mean, we were going to Green Bay next Wednesday. We’re going on long trips. We’re going to go to Muskegon Mona Shores here in a couple of week. Things like that. We have great parents in our program.”
