Hockey roundup: Eskymos, Emeralds eliminated

ESCANBABA – Escanaba and Manistique hockey hit the road for regional semifinal action on Thursday. Here’s what went down:

Marquette 7, Escanaba 1

It was a tough night on the ice for Escanaba hockey as it fell 7-1 to Marquette.

Marquette senior Nash Riipi scored the Sentinels first goal less than a minute into the game. Senior CJ Carter found the back of the net with 2:25 to go in the first period to give Marquette a 2-0 lead. The Sentinels found the the opening again with 1:07 to play in the first period as senior Adam Heikkila scored the third goal for Marquette and they led 3-0 after one.

The Second period featured more of the same as Marquette junior Connor Stade scored two goals in the period. Sophomore Carter Beerling added another goal.

Escanaba junior Alex Schwalbach scored the Eskymos only goal with 6:14 to go in the second period.

Marquette senior Caleb Fries added a goal in the third period as the Sentinels cruised to victory.

Sault Ste. Marie 4, Manistique 1

An up-and-down season came to an end for Manistique hockey in a 4-1 to Sault Ste. Marie in regional semifinal action Thursday.

The Blue Devils scored the first goal of the game halfway through the first period as senior Garrett Gorsuch found the back off the net off an assist by Odin Medrick to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.

The Emeralds answered back in the second period as junior Carter LaVigne tied the game with a goal coming off an assist from Austin Hinkson.

The Blue Devils broke the tie in the second period on a goal by junior Cale Bale. Evan Kennedy and Gorsuch were both credited with assists.

The Blue Devils added to the lead in the third period as Bale scored the unassisted goal to put the Blue Devils up 3-1. Blue Devils junior Randen Blair added a late goal in the the period.
