Hannahville hoops sweeps Ojibwe Charter

HANNAHVILLE — The Hannahville boys withstood Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter’s challenge as they hung on for a 64-61 basketball triumph here Saturday morning.

Hannahville’s girls did likewise in a 44-41 victory over the Eagles.

The victories enabled the Soaring Eagles to sweep the weekend series. The Hannahvile boys improved to 14-3 overall and 13-2 in the Northern Lights League. The girls are 2-11 overall and 2-10 in the league.

Junior guard Deshawn Metzger became the first Hannahville cager to go over the 1,000-point mark in a 90-68 conquest of the Ojibwe boys Friday night.

“That was exciting,” Hannahville coach Jon Bintner said. “I’m glad the boys got to be part of that. Jayden Sagataw has also had a pretty good year and Jesse Wabnimkee had a good day.”

The Hannahville girls won for the first time this season in their 53-28 triumph Friday.

Hannahville’s boys led 54-37 following a layup by Wabnimkee, set up on a pass from Sagataw late in the third quarter of Saturday’s Northern Lights League contest.

Ojibwe shaved its deficit to 54-44 on a layup by Henry Lyons with help from Pietre Follador early in the fourth.

Hannahville still led 58-46 before Ojibwe (5-9 overall, 5-5 league) answered with a 10-1 run, shaving its deficit to 59-56 on a jump shot from the right corner by Robert Ferris with 3:30 remaining.

Ojibwe got within 63-61 before Sagataw split a pair of free throws to end the scoring with 12.8 seconds remaining.

“The kids tried hard, that’s for sure,” Ojibwe coach Josh Biron said. “This is a young team that shows a lot of heart. We’re learning to work together. They’re learning to trust themselves. Today’s comeback gives us a boost.”

Wabnimkee scored a career-high 23 points. Metzger scored 16 and Sagataw had 13 for the Soaring Eagles, who committed 15 turnovers

Ferris drained eight 3-point shots for 24 points. Andrew Leblanc added 18 and Lyons finished with 16 for Ojibwe. The Eagles had 17 miscues.

The Hannahville girls led 34-24 following Jaylyn Keshick’s jumper from the lane with five minutes, nine seconds left in the third frame.

Ojibwe, however, climbed with 34-30 on a 19-foot jumper from the left wing by Siena Kuzmik with 1:58 remaining in the third.

The Eagles tied the contest at 40 with 2:51 left to play when Kendreya Teeple split a pair of gifters.

Hannahville regained the lead on a putback by Brittany Thunder and went up 44-40 on a 15-foot set shot by Shandroya Shawano-Frye with 70 seconds remaining.

Sithomet led Hannahville with 13 points and Thunder added 10. Kuzmik and Teeple scored 19 points apiece for Ojibwe.

The Soaring Eagles had 17 turnovers and Ojibwe had 16.

Hannahville hosts Superior Central tonight. The girls’ game tips off at 6 and the boys play at 7:30. Ojibwe hosts Kinross Maplewood Baptist tonight.
