ESCANABA — Manistique senior Nate Schoenow is your 2023-24 boys U.P. Swimmer of the Year.

Schoenow broke five school records during his time with the Emeralds. He broke three of those records during the 2024 U.P. Final on Feb. 17, which included the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.23, the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.18, which stood for 21 years and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.39. He also owns school record in the 500-yard freestyle set in 2023 with a time of 5:28.98 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:16.23 set at the 2023 U.P. Finals.

Schoenow now holds every single individual school record. He also holds the 200-yard freestyle relay record along with Grant Mason, Enrique Martin and Dustin Brewster.

In 2023, he broke the 100-yard breaststroke record with a time of 1:08.78. That time broke a 36-year old record. “I’m so proud to have watched him grow and achieve these records,” Emeralds coach Parker Birr said. “It was well deserved for all his efforts and hard work over the last four years.”
