Mid Pen conquers Black Bears in season opener

COOKS — With high school volleyball season officially underway in the state of Michigan, Tuesday served as the season opener for several area teams. It also served as the first meeting between Big Bay de Noc and Rock Mid Peninsula this season.

Mid Pen took the win in five sets, defeating the Black Bears 25-15, 16-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-7. “I was really glad to see my girls working together as a team,” Black Bears’ coach Angie Carley said. “It was our first time out with a libero, we changed up our line-up and the girls still went into this with a positive mindset and it showed. Camryn Pederson had some great serves and it was great to see Lila Morris swinging at the net. Macy Peterson was all over the place and had some great digs against Mid Pen’s hard servers.”

The Wolverines’ Josie Hemminger tallied a team-best 11 aces to go with nine digs, six kills, three assists and a block. Kristin Koth earned a 15 assists and contributed 10 digs, three kills and atrio of aces. Rachel Johnson added a team-leading eights kills with seven aces, four digs, one assist and one block. Olivia Nummilien earned eight aces, six digs, five kills and an assist. Gallie Haring earned a team-best 13 digs and an ace. Hope Brunngraeber added five aces, five gids and four helpers.
