Mikey D’s suffers home loss to Channing

ESCANABA — Offense deserted Mikey D’s Beer Cave baseball after the first inning Monday night in an 11-3 loss to the Channing Railroaders. The Escanaba-based team did all its scoring on three hits in the opening frame of the Superiorland League contest. The hosts, however, were unable to get another hit through the remainder of the contest. Isaac Lorenzoni pitched five innings for the win. He struck out 11 and walked four. Scott Hiller fanned five and walked none through two innings of relief. “Isaac threw real well,” said Channing manager/catcher Ken Pekarek. “This is the first time I got to see Scott pitch. He’s a nice pick-up for us.”Five errors also didn’t help Mikey D’s cause. Esky committed three in the fifth when the Railroaders scored six times for an 8-3 advantage.”We had a ton of errors, including one with the bases loaded.” Esky manager Jon Bintner said. “I was surprised to see Lorenzoni pitching tonight. Both of their pitchers threw well. We also had a lot of strikeouts. After the first inning we stopped putting the ball in play.” Channing (2-3 overall, 2-1 league), then cashed in on four walks and a throwing miscue while adding three runs in the sixth. Carson Chartier got Channing’s first hit on an infield single in the fifth. The Railroaders scored the tying run on Pekarek’s bunt and Chase Carlson’s double to left field gave them a 4-3 lead. “Once we got runners on base, we were able to move them around,” Pekarek said. “Timely hitting is something we’ve struggled with. It was nice to see some of that come through for us tonight.”

The Railroaders finished with six hits, including a pair by first-baseman Zach Spera. Mikey D’s opened the scoring on Mason Korhonen’s single to center and gained its three-run lead on Mason Bower’s two-run single to left in the first. Channing, taking advantage of four walks, climbed within 3-2 in the third. Jackson Bower, the second of three Esky pitchers, absorbed the loss. He struck the side in the fourth prior to allowing six runs on four hits in the fifth. He finished with four strikeouts and gave up four walks and nine runs on five hits through 2 1/3 innings. Danhoff worked the first three frames, striking out five, walking six and allowing two runs on no hits.

“Elliot throws hard and has a good secondary pitch,” Bintner said. “Only, he didn’t have command of his pitches tonight and his pitch count elevated.” Korhonen threw 1 2/3 innings, fanned two, walked one, hit a batter and gave up a hit in the last 1 2/3 frames. “We’ve faced Elliot a lot,” Pekarek said. “He’s tough to hit.” Mikey D’s hosts Negaunee at Al Ness Field Monday at 7:30 p.m. Channing faces the Marquette County Mavericks at Negaunee Monday.
