Broncos, Norway split doubleheader

BARK RIVER — The Bark River-Harris Broncos and Norway Knights provided an offensive display as they split a softball doubleheader here Thursday night.

BR-H hung on to win the opener 10-8 and Norway took the nightcap 12-9.

The Broncos gained a seemingly-comfortable 10-4 lead on Kaet Erickson’s two-run single to right-centerfield in the sixth inning of first game.

Norway tallied four runs in the seventh, scoring its final run on Elizabeth Romitti’s single to right-center in the seventh.

BR-H led 5-0 after three frames before Andi Carlson scored on a sacrifice bunt to bring the Knights within a run in the fourth.

“You try to forget about that and move on,” said BR-H junior Nina Bower, who took the win. “We just made the basic plays and got the momentum back. In the second game, they came out pretty hard and we struggled a little more with our hitting.”

Abbie Ingersoll singled to right-center to put the Broncos up by a pair of runs in their half of the fourth.

BR-H made it 7-4 on a double to right-center by Aubrey Gagnon and Caroline Mileski’s single over the rightfielder’s head gave the Broncos an 8-4 cushion in the fifth.

In the second game, the Knights broke a 9-9 deadlock by scoring three times in the seventh.

Anna Debadart gave Norway a 10-9 lead on a passed ball and Romitti added a two-run, inside-the-park homer to right for a 12-9 cushion in the seventh.

“We told the girls these were two even teams and we had to get one,” said Norway coach Bob Bal. “We’re a pretty young team. Our baserunners made a few mistakes early, but confidence is a big thing. There’s always room for improvement. The weather was perfect and these were two entertaining games. Bower pitched well in the first game. Rob (Arndt) coaches them hard.”

The Knights, fueled by senior Taylor Adams’ two-run single to center, gained a 3-0 lead in the opening frame.

BR-H scored its first run on Bower’s single to right in its half of the first.

Norway then took advantage of three errors in the second while extending its lead to 7-1.

The Broncos responded in a big way in their half of the second as Bower’s two-run single to center brought them within 7-5.

Bower then scored on an error, shaving BR-H’s deficit to 7-6.

The contest was tied at nine after six, setting the stage for Norway’s deciding runs.

BR-H hosts Carney-Nadeau in a twinbill today at 1. Norway hosts Negaunee at 3:30 p.m. (CDT).

Starting at $3.50/week.
