Bleau lifts Big Bay over Kinross Maplewood in championship game

HANNAHVILLE — The record shows senior Alix Bleau scored just three points in the Northern Lights League girls’ championship basketball game here Saturday.

Her points came at the most critical time, however, as she banked a 35-foot jump shot at the final buzzer to lift Big Bay to a 48-45 triumph over Kinross Maplewood Baptist.

“They had the ball with 35 seconds to go and they double dribbled with .8 second left,” Big Bay coach Bob Pederson said in a telephone interview. “You’re hoping and praying, but you’re not expecting that. We were thinking overtime at that point. They had a nine-point lead with six minutes to go. We were just happy to tie it and take a shot.”

Big Bay (15-6) takes a seven-game winning streak into tonight’s Division 3 district opener at Rapid River, which tips off at 7.

“You can’t just step out on the court,” said Pederson. “We’re going to have to go out and take it from them. One good thing about this tournament, it’s a good warm-up for the district.”

Maplewood used a box-in-one on Bleau, limiting her to just three shots.

“We knew it was coming, but we had other girls step up,” said Pederson. “Gracynn Durrance controlled the boards in the first half.”

Junior Camryn Pederson led Big Bay with 17 points. Sophomore Lila Morris added 11 points and Durrance finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Maplewood, with no seniors on its roster, was led by juniors Chloe May and Aksana Chromy with 12 points each.

In the boys’ title game, defending champ Hannahville dropped a 54-36 decision to Maplewood.

The Soaring Eagles were within 17-15 in the second quarter.

Maplewood, however, answered with a 12-0 run, taking a 29-15 advantage into the halftime locker room.

“It looked like we just ran out of gas,” said Hannahville coach Jon Bintner. “They did kind of a token full-court press and we didn’t have much energy left. They hit all four of their 3-pointers and it took the wind out of our sails. We did a lot more dribbling by ourselves, although we didn’t really play that bad a game.”

Senior John Smith paced Maplewood with 12 points. Classmate Brayden Altoft and eighth-grader Caden Chromy scored 10 apiece.

Sophomore Jayden Sagataw hit 16 points for Hannahville, which travels to Superior Central today.

“There were a lot of tears after the game, but the guys should be proud of themselves,” said Bintner. “They beat a good team in the semifinals. They made huge strides this season. They’re willing to work hard and getting more used to playing with each other. I’m definitely pleased with how we played. We made them work for their victory. We should continue to get better.”

The Soaring Eagles defeated Big Bay 68-58 in the semifinals.

Big Bay led 41-33 early in the third quarter.

Hannahville, however, answered with a 10-0 run and surged to a 43-41 lead on sophomore Deshawn Metzger’s jumper from the right corner with 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the third.

A steal and layup by eighth-grader Parker Pederson gave the Black Bears a 51-44 lead late in the third.

The Soaring Eagles then climbed within 51-50 on freshman Sam Beaver’s seven-foot floater early in the fourth.

Big Bay was still within 60-56 following a putback by junior Steven Holmes with two minutes left to play before Hannahville sealed the verdict with an 8-2 run.

“They played tough,” said Big Bay coach Gunnar Mickelson. “Jon coached a great game and we shot ourselves in the foot a few times. Braedon (Thill) shot well from the line. Nick DesJarden came on strong for us this year. He altered a lot of shots which doesn’t show up on the stat sheet.”

Metzger drained five triples and hit 29 points for the Soaring Eagles, who committed 25 turnovers and hit just 9-of-24 free throws.

Thill tossed in 18 points. DesJarden hit 14 and senior Cameron Miller had 10 for Big Bay, which finished with 17 miscues and was 12-of-23 from the line.

Maplewood romped past Paradise 74-33 in the other semifinal.

The Black Bears scored five in double digits, including Chromy who led the way with 15 points. Senior Luke Royer scored 13. Smith and sophomore Ian Browne added 12 apiece and Altoft tallied 11.

Senior Seth Mills hit 15, including a half-court shot at the end of the third quarter, for the Rockets.

Big Bay’s girls reached the title round with a 53-43 triumph over Beaver Island.

Bleau scored 14 points for the Black Bears and eighth-grader Haley Pietras scored 17 for the Islanders.

Aksana Chromy hit 21 points as Maplewood defeated Mackinac Island 53-37 in the other semifinal. May added 12 and junior Finley Hudacek scored 11.

Sophomore Madison Gamble scored 16 and junior Makayla Rickley had 11 for the Lakers.
