Gladstone, IM shine at wrestling championships

MARQUETTE — It was an exciting day for Gladstone and Iron Mountain wrestlers here Saturday as they achieved high honors in the Upper Peninsula Championships.

Gladstone retained its title 237 points, followed by Iron Mountain 183, Escanaba 133, Kingsford 130 1/2 and Negaunee 120.

“The kids wrestled great,” said Gladstone coach Jeff Brazeau. “Even the guys who lost in the early rounds came back and wrestled tough. We had seven in the finals and that’s where we got lot of our points. Cole Potier (senior) has really been wrestling well. I’m really looking forward to seeing him wrestle in the post-season.”

Iron Mountain junior Shayna Hruska was selected the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, becoming the first girls’ wrestler to receive that honor and earn a U.P. title.

She accomplished that by taking an 8-2 decision from St. Ignace freshman Dalton Champion in the 106-pound final, improving her record to 16-7.

“It feels awesome to be part of U.P. history,” she said. “I worked hard at practice and set goals. I knew this season was going to be better than last season. I’m way stronger and more confident than in the past.”

Gladstone junior Austin Solis (144) needed just 22 seconds to pin Esky senior Adam Reimer for his second title.

“I knew I was fast on my feet and could take him down and everything worked out perfectly,” said Solis, who improved to 28-3. “I knew I would be able to win it (U.P. title) again. There’s a little more pressure coming back here as a champion, but the adrenalin just took over. This is one of the best fields of wrestlers I’ve seen here in a long time.”

Potier (190) gained his first title by taking a 12-2 decision from Bark River-Harris senior Drew Allgeyer.

“This is a special and awesome feeling,” said Potier, now 29-3. “The last time he slammed me illegally which kind of made me kind of mad. I wasn’t going to lose.”

Gladstone junior Drew Hansen (126) was crowned champion after taking a 4-0 decision from Iron Mountain junior Tyler Winch.

“I just approached this as I would any other meet,” said Hansen (26-1). “I just wanted to take care of business. Tyler is very good. I beat him 6-0 earlier this season, but he has learned to wrestle a little cleaner. He’s real clean on his feet.”

Esky sophomore Cade Krueger (120) used a late takedown to defeat Gladstone sophomore Conner Britton 8-5 for his first title.

“I’ve been working for this all year and wrestling to the best of my ability,” said Krueger (23-7). “I’ve been improving each year. Personally, I don’t think I wrestled my best but got it done. I circled this date on my calendar and think there was a sense of relief once it was over. This is a very good confidence builder, but I’ve got to keep working and improving.”

Senior Dillon Raab (157) provided BR-H with its lone championship after pinning Gladstone freshman Trevor Thorbahn in 30 seconds.

“This is the fourth time I’ve wrestled him,” said Raab (28-2). “I thought it’d go longer, but the opportunity was there and knew I had to jump on it. It’s exciting to come up here and get my first U.P. title. This is a new kind of title for me. This was one of my goals at the start of the season. I had that senior sense of urgency coming in, knowing this was my last chance.”

Kingsford senior Josh Peterson pinned Gladstone junior Owen Mattonen 3:07 into the 175 final for his 100th career victory.

“This is pretty special,” said Peterson (14-1). “That’s why I put all the work in. I knew I had to get into the weight room and on the mat and been working harder on both. You have to keep getting better. Once you get comfortable, you get in trouble. I appreciate the special haircut I got from Melissa Ingus and the help I got from Forever Fitness.”

Iron Mountain senior Evan Haferkorn (150) remained undefeated (23-0) by pinning Negaunee senior Brody Prusi in 1:55.

“We’re absolutely happy with being runner-up,” said Mountaineers’ coach Cory McLaren. “We got six into the finals and won five weight classes. Eight of our 10 kids placed and Shayna did an outstanding job. We can’t ask for more than anything that happened.”

Sault junior William Ohman (138) improved to 27-0 after pinning Newberry junior Hayden O’Neil.

Gladstone senior Eli Terrien (113) settled for runner-up honors after dropping a 7-4 decision to Iron Mountain junior Alexander WIlson.

Esky junior Eli Gardner (132) placed second after dropping a 15-4 decision to Iron Mountain senior Shawn McGuire and BR-H junior Lucas Sischo (215) became runner-up after falling to Kingsford junior Elizin Rouse in 5:23.

Gladstone sophomore Aidan Spriks (106), Esky junior Thomas Benoit (285) and BR-H senior Josh Riley (138) placed third.

Braves’ sophomore Adam Belanger (132) and Manistique senior Dillon Hayes (120) and junior Michael Bouche (215) took fourth and Gladstone freshmen Mason Wells (138) and Jack Savard (165), Esky freshman Linnea Britton (113), BR-H senior David Mosse (150) and Manistique freshman Landon Weber (106) and sophomore Griffin Maline (144) were fifth.
