Turnovers hurt BR-H girls
HARRIS — Turnovers hurt Bark River-Harris’s cause in a season-opening 50-38 girls’ basketball loss to Ishpeming here Tuesday night.
The Broncos had 35 miscues in the non-conference contest.
“They put a man-to-man press on us and it bothered us,” said BR-H coach Matt Richer. “We have a young group. I think they were just nervous. We’ve been doing more ballhandling drills than we ever had. We were a step slow and a step late on everything, although the girls worked hard.”
The Hematites grabbed an early 13-2 lead. The Broncos, however, pulled within three points early in the fourth quarter.
Ishpeming’s Jenna Maki scored 20 points and Peyton Manninen added 10.
Hope Varoni paced BR-H with 12 points. Lauren Zawada collected eight points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists.
“Hope and Lauren had pretty nice games overall,” said Richer. “Maki was the difference in the game. At times she just kind of took over. We had little bit of foul trouble. We just couldn’t get things going. We have a good group. We’ll be fine.”
The Broncos, who also dropped the jayvee game, visit Forest Park tonight at 8:15.
