Braves swim team does well at Negaunee meet

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves swim team competed very well in their first meet of the season against Ishpeming-Negaunee swim team at Negaunee High School. Gladstone had just over three weeks of practice. The boys team won 83-65. Nate Lanaville and Gideon Barron each won two races, with Lanaville winning the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Barron taking the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle. Aiden Duncan won the 100 breaststroke and placed second in the 100 freestyle. Rodney Van Brocklin placed second in the 100 backstroke. The boys relay teams won all three relays with Wilson Zhao, Fred Van Brocklin, Lanaville, and Duncan winning the 200 medley relay, Fred, Aiden, Wilson, and Nate winning the 200 freestyle, and Rodney V., Gideon, Wilson, and Fred winning the 400 free relay.

The girls team lost a close one, with Ishpeming-Nauganee scoring 91 points to Gladstone’s 86 points. The girls team had a great meet despite only having eight swimmers, sweeping all the swimming events. Ava Getzloff, Reese Herioux, Mary Hook, and Aubrey Elliot each notched two wins apiece with Getzloff winning the 200 IM and 100 back, Herioux winning the 100 and 200 freestyle, Hook winning the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, and Elliot winning the 50 and 500 freestyle. Veronica Spreitzer took second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 freestyle. The relay teams did awesome with the team of Ava, Mary, Aubrey, and Addy Occhietti taking the 200 Medley relay; Veronica, Reese, Mary, and Maia Nelson taking the 200 freestyle relay; and Ava, Reese, Aubrey, and Ariana Erbetta taking the 400 free relay.

The Braves next meet will be Saturday at Westwood High School for the Westwood Relay meet.
