Wolverines get district title

ST. NICHOLAS — A Division 4 district volleyball final went right down to the wire here Friday night as the Mid Peninsula Wolverines escaped with a 3-2 (25-23, 8-25, 29-27, 13-25, 22-20) victory over the Superior Central Cougars.

This marked the third district title in four years for the Wolverines, who face Rudyard in a regional opener Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Munising.

“This is the first time we won the district at home,’ said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “I’m so proud of how hard the girls fought for it. Our fan section was phenomenal. It was very exciting to win it at home. We came out flat in the second set, but the seniors kept our girls hyped.”

Josie Hemminger served for seven aces and Kora Prater hit five. Rachel Johnson collected nine kills and two blocks and Alexa Haring tallied 13 assists.

Prater was Mid Pen’s defensive leader with 33 digs. Koth added 22 and Hemminger had nine.

“It was a great team effort,” said Kayser. “The girls wanted it and fought hard for it. Kora Prater ran our backcourt defense and this was Kristin’s best night all year. She played a phenomenal match and Josie was strong at the net. It was back and forth all night. This was a hard-fought match.”
