Vanderschaaf gets Runner of the Year honors

NEGAUNEE — Carson Vanderschaaf was feeling under the weather and finished 17th in the Upper Peninsula Division 1 Cross Country Finals at Flat Rock Oct. 22.

Despite his misfortune, the Marquette senior earned Boys’ Runner of the Year honors in recent virtual voting by the Upper Peninsula Cross Country Coaches Association.

Vanderschaaf placed eighth among 227 runners in the Division 1 race in the Portage Invitational, covering the 3.1-mile course in a personal-best 15 minutes, 43.1 seconds.

He was the frontrunner among U.P. runners through most of the season prior to missing the Great Northern Conference meet due to illness.

Joining him on the Dream Team are Gladstone senior Drew Hughes, Sault Ste. Marie freshman Gabe Litzner and senior Cody Aldridge, Marquette seniors Colin Vanderschaaf and Brady Ketzenberger, Dollar Bay senior Amos Norland and Negaunee senior Judge Anderson.

Hughes captured his third consecutive Mid-Peninsula Conference title and was runner-up to Litzner in the U.P. Finals.

Colin Vanderschaaf copped the Great Northern Conference title. Norland took the Copper Mountain Conference championship and Anderson became the champion in the WestPAC Conference championship race on his home course Oct. 13.

Newberry freshman Samantha Taylor was selected GIrls’ Runner of the Year.

Other Dream Team picks include junior teammate Kaylen Clark, Sault senior Cassandra Gallagher, Ishpeming junior Lola Korpi, Houghton freshman Tessa Rautiola, Marquette junior Monet Argeropoulos and freshman Ella Fure and Negaunee senior Endla Harris.

Taylor, who was runner-up by four seconds to Korpi in the Queen City Invitational at Marquette Aug. 26, went undefeated through the remainder of the season.

She copped the Eastern U.P. and Straits Area Conference Jamboree titles prior to taking the U.P. D-3 championship.

Clark, who came into this season as defending U.P. champion, overcame an ankle injury to take runner-up honors in this year’s Finals.

Korpi gained her second straight U.P. D-2 title and was crowned Mid-Peninsula Conference champion for the third straight time. Harris was runner-up in the M-PC.

Rautiola earned top honors and Korpi took second in the WestPAC Conference championship race at Negaunee.

Argeropoulos earned the Great Northern Conference title and Fure placed second Oct. 13 in Escanaba.

Coach of the Year honors went to Marquette’s Derek Marr (D-1), Painesdale Jeffers’ Sam Kilpela (D-2) and Munising’s Mark Kinnunen (D-3).

Other area boys earning all-state recognition include Gladstone sophomore Aaron Hughes and junior Tanner Howes in D-1, Manistique sophomore Ben Gilroy and senior Grant Mason (D-2) and Holy Name sophomore Dan Carlson (D-3).

Additional girls’ all-state recipients are Escanaba’s Alicia Mabie (D-1), Manistique freshman Maya Carlson and North Central’s Hope Varoni (D-2) and Superior Central freshman Kiera McDonnald (D-3).
