Munising gets Eight East title

NEWBERRY — The Munising Mustangs captured the Great Lakes Eight East Conference football title and received their due during voting by the league’s coaches Oct. 28.

Munising senior Josiah Peramaki earned Offensive Player of the Year honors and teammate Jacob Mattson was named Defensive Player of the Year.

The Mustangs were selected Team of the Year and guided by Coach of the Year Matt Mattson.

Rapid River senior Carter Johnson and Newberry sophomore Matt Rahilly became first-team picks at wide receiver.

Rudyard junior Cam Peterson was tabbed the league’s offensive hybrid.

All-conference offensive linemen include Munising senior Riley Murk, Newberry senior Blake Doke and Cedarville-DeTour’s Ty Norris.

Those receiving similar honors at linebacker are Newberry senior Zach Burton, Munising senior Jacob Mattson, Pickford’s Garrett Osborne and Cedarville-DeTour’s Mike Perkins.

Top defensive linemen are Rudyard junior Eli Sprague and Munising senior Ashton Wymer.

First-team selections at defensive end are Peterson and Newberry junior Gabe Luck.

Leading defensive backs include Newberry senior Marco Juarez, Rudyard junior Aiden Bickel and Munising senior Kane Nebel.

Munising senior Micaiah Peramaki is the league’s defensive hybrid with Rudyard senior Jacob Nolan selected as kicker.

Cedarville-DeTour’s Cason Smith became the league’s punter with BIckel as top return specialist.

Smith is the league’s second-team QB with Juarez and Perkins picked at running back.

Bickel and Cedarville-DeTour’s Hossack Sweeney were selected at wide receiver.

Offensive hybrid’s are Pickford’s Seth Miller and Superior Central senior Lucas Swetich.

Second-team offensive linemen include Rapid River’s Grady Smith, Osborne and Rudyard senior Jesse Zeeryp.

Defensive end selections are Pickford’s Brayden Altoft and Munising senior Reagan Bowerman with Pickford’s Cale Maciag and Engadine’s Connor Hall picked at defensive back.

Rahilly is this year’s second-team defensive hybrid with Engadine’s Hunter Cameron the pick as kicker and Superior Central senior as return specialist.

Those receiving honorable mention on offense are Newberry’s Gavin Nutkins and Brimley’s Trey Lynn (QB); Rapid River’s Jonah Frizzel-Brown, Cedarville-DeTour’s Ron Papin, Pickford’s Hayden Rader and Superior Central’s Jason Kanerva (offensive linemen); Munising’s Cully Trzeciak (lineman); Engadine’s Hayden O’Neil and Rudyard’s Damon MacDowell (running back).

Honorable mention recipients on defense include Newberry’s Jacob Mohar, Rudyard’s Dylan McMillan and Miller (backs); Trzeciak and Engadine’s Kaeden Sistrunk (ends); Rapid River’s Eddie Forslund, Brimley’s Owen Johnson and Smith (linebackers) and Superior Central’s Eli Penney (lineman).
