Austin rewarded for milestone

MARQUETTE — Newberry coach Joe Austin reached a significant milestone and was rewarded for his efforts in voting during the 73rd annual football meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters here Nov. 16.

Austin, who achieved his 200th career victory this season was selected Coach of the Year after leading the Indians through a 9-2 season which ended with a 36-22 loss in the eight-player, Division 1 regional final at Munising.

Also nominated were Munising’s Matt Mattson, North Central’s Leo Gorzinski and Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Brett Gervais.

Coach Gorzinski has compiled a 55-3 record through four seasons.

The Indians also dropped a 14-0 regular-season decision to the Mustangs, who were named D-1 Team of the year.

Munising finished 11-1 after dropping a 22-20 decision to Merrill in a state semifinal contest at home Nov. 12.

North Central captured its third straight D-2 state championship in a 66-26 conquest of Mendon Saturday at Northern MIchigan University’s Superior Dome. The Jets finished 13-0 after recording a state-record 37th consecutive victory.

Jets’ senior quarterback Luke Gorzinski was selected Offensive Player of the Year and linebacker Dillon Raab earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Gorzinski was named last year’s state Player of the Year by the Associated Press and Raab earned a first-team berth.

Raab recorded 77 tackles and intercepted two passes for touchdowns this season and Munising senior Jacob Mattson, who was also nominated, had 82 tackles, four QB sacks and three fumble recoveries.

Ontonagon senior Mason Totzke received the Mitchell Snyder Lineman of the Year Award.

Rudyard senior Jacob Nolan was selected the U.P’s top kicker, hitting 43-of-46 extra points and a 33-yard field goal.

North Central junior Adrian Mercier set the state extra-point record for extra points at 60 and hit a 35-yard field goal.

Forest Park sophomore Gabe Quevedo was the pick as All-U.P. punter and Norway junior Wyatt Spade, who tallied 577 yards in kickoff returns earned similar honors as return specialist.
